Answer to my own question:
So what happened is this: some guy stole the m3 and the cops were chasing him. He lost control because there was some black ice on the street and he slammed into the TL and flipped it. I scrounged around the wreckage and my friend was able to get the M3 grill...haha

hehehe... used to shop at that University Food Market in the background pic... man, that place is a ripoff... super expensive, charging us poor used-to-be students a fortune...
that is a nice M3.

IMO, this brings up a good debate....
Should cops chase vehicles like maniacs through the streets? I know LA wants to stop it (or is stopping it...).
Is a $50K car (even a $20K car) worth the risk? I don't know if anyone died in that accident but you know the people in the TL aren't without a scratch.

first i wonder even if there was any survivors from the tl wreckage?
second how do we know if the m3 was stolen?
third i doubt the m3 flipped the tl. to flip a car like that would require HEAVY impact and looking at the m3 it looks like it just ran into it or the the tl fell on top of it.
fourth i am really curious about the rear of the m3. why is the rear bumper disloged like that on the passenger side. looks like no scrapes or hit just looks like it popped off. could this be engineered to do this? maybe the whole car absorbs the impact? if so then damn bmw has done a great job with safety.

two comments:
It is good to see that the Acura's A-pillar stayed mostly intact. That is what keeps your head from being rammed into your chest cavity in a roll over, unless you are able to duck to the side...
Looks like the entire rear end was ripped off. That's likely where he was caught.
As for why it flipped, it depends on the Acura's speed and angle of impact. Just like in Judo, it is easy to redirect a force with relatively little effort, if you have the right leverage for it.

The trunk of the TL was hit. There is nothing in the trunk but a little sheet metal. It was hit by the front of the BMW where all of the weight is located (engine, etc...). It's basically smashing a rock into an empty can of coke. All that matters is that the frame stayed intact. The CL/TL have excellent crash ratings. Ever hear of crumple zones?

I'm super impressed how well the cabin of the TL survived. I've seen crash footage for the CL on the IHTS page, and the CL has a rock solid cabin (the rest of the car will vaporize, but saves the passengers......
