BMW 740 LS1 swap

So theres a 1995 740iL at work for sale for $300. The car needs a ton of work and the body and interior aren't in the greatest of shapes. The only thing the car needs to start running is a battery though. So I was thinking of picking it up and getting it running, fixing the labor intesive myself and driving it for a little while and then eventually drop an LS1 with a T56 in it and making a crazy sleeper. Am I totally crazy?

What you want for it is probably more than I can afford. This would be a budget build.

it'll be a bitchin project!

BUT, don't buy a POS car for the swap, wait and find something in good condition with just a blown motor or something. You'll spend a lot on odds and ends getting this car in good condition.

You're not crazy at all! The manual trans might be a bit challenging, it would certainly be easier with a 4L60E or similar auto tranny. OBD I will certainly make things easier.

BMWs have very persnickity immobilizers built into their electronics, make sure that an engine swap wouldn't require an enormous re-wire of the car's electronics.

I've heard of LS1 swaps into E39 5 series cars, what a great swap.

Thats whats holding me back. The car needs cats, rear suspension ($$$ self leveling suspension), heater core is leaking and a bunch of other little stuff. I mean I get parts at cost and labor is free. Plus I would go aftermarket for some stuff where its just cheaper and as good but its still a lot of stuff. The body I could care less about, as long as there is no rust, flat black it will become. The interior wasn't in the best of shape and thats a bit of a pain to get back in decent condition.

LS1s make every car better besides the obvious.... that 2JZ swap into the E39 is sweet too

Thats a great idea, plus its different. $300 for almost any rolling shell is great but the car runs so thats a great deal IMO. Some cars lesser than a 740i with NO interior, rolling on steelies go for $500-1000+

I believe the OP is a BMW tech so he should have little problems with re-wiring everything, it'll just be time-consuming for him

^ Ha that guy is on our local euro group.

No music. Sounds sick!

I was thinking, might not be even worth it. Even after its all said and done you are still left with a huge car.

Now if you wanted to put a LS1 into an E30/E36 then you would have a crazy toy for the weekends. Im sure that might come out to be the same price after you fix up that 7er.

well if you just wanted a nice project car for the weekends...strip that biatch out!!! less weight.

Get a used junkyard LS1, tear it apart and rebuild it it with some HPE cams and maybe a stroker kit and your set. and since there is not much room under hood there I would go with an STS turbo kit.

RAO's M3 is awsome, i was at a meeting with the legacy crowd and he brought the M3 and its an amazing feat, granted it was about 20 outside/summer tires, that thing will be a beast once it gets warm enough so get some kind of traction. But it sounds amazing.... totally silent at idle, but once its revved it screams.

Wow, I have never heard of anyone putting an LS1 in a BMW. That would be a nice sleeper, sounds like a good idea to me.

Keep us informed if you decide to go thru with it.

why not a M5 motor. 500 hp v-10. yes i know it's more expensive. plus i know there's a crap load of mods for LS1s and LS2s but BMW to BMW i think would be a hell of a lot easier.
even the new M3 v-8 motor would cool if you find one for a decent price that hasn't been beat to hell.

Some dude on LS1tech parted out a C5 Vette and dropped the entire powertrain in an EK hatch. All the LS1 guys thought he was crazy.

he actually dropped an EK hatch body onto a C5 frame and powertrain. It is a pretty cool project IMO

You could just by any e36 and basicly drop the ls1 in. You can find a 325 with a ton of miles for dirt cheap

I decided to pass on the car. Just waaay to much wrong with it and I didn't feel like dealing with it all. Plus it had a Nikasil short block in it still.
