For the bikers....

What is the point of riding your motorcycle with your helmet attached to the back of it? That screams fuckin retard if you ask me. Just leave it at home if you're not gonna wear it. The people around you are just laughing.

I see bikes all the time where the driver isn't protected but his/her passenger is. It just a mindset where you act differently when another persons safety is in your hands.

I drive differently when I'm alone vs when I have passengers in my car for example. I can handle hurting myself but the thought of hurting someone I care about is an entirely different story.(I wish smokers had this mindset)

well the helmet on the side can be for the passenger. the reason why you see the passenger with a helmet and not the driver is that it's by law the passenger needs to have a helmet. the driver however doesn't necessarily need one.

in my state RI, all passengers are required to wear a helmet however by law the driver doesn't have to

In Mass, both the driver and passenger are required to have helmets on by law.

Either way it's totally stupid. If you have it, put the damn thing on your head. ESPECIALLY on the highway.

In PA the helmet law says if the rider meets the criterea to not wear a helmet then the passenger doesn't have to either. Personally I always wear my FF helmet and so does my passenger.

I know people who ride with a helmet on their bike for various reasons..
1. For a passenger
2. In case they ride into a state with a helmet law
3. In case it starts raining (rain hurts your face more than the rest or your body and your more likely to go down)
4. They will wear the helmet on the highway and then take it off when cruising the backroads

Helmet law or not, I'm just saying, if you're gonna have it hanging off the side while riding, you look like an ass. Just wear the thing until you go pick up whomever is gonna wear it otherwise leave it at home.

Such irony would have it if he crashed, split his head open but survived only to realize if he was wearing the helmet and not the bike wearing it, he wouldnt be a vegetable. Just saying.....

Didn't think so

Also your suggestion to wear the helmet until the passenger is picked up is retarded. You do realize there are different helmet sizes? There is no way I could wear my fiance's helmet. Her helmet is about 3 sizes smaller than mine.

I dont need to ride a bike to know how stupid it is to not wear a helmet. You're a rider, you should know 1st hand.

I'm not getting in a bickering match with you. If this guy has a helment attached for his passenger, fine, I guess it's his choice whether he wants to wear a helmet or not if there are no laws in the state (IL is no helmet law).

wow I am sure no one rides with the helmet attached to the back of their bikes for show or cuz they think it looks good there. If it's there that means they might need it at some point in time. And safety is way more important (to me at least) then not looking like a retard with an attached helmet to the back of the bike.
Where I live, helmet is mandatory for the rider at all time as well as the passangers.

^Agreed.

My point is, if it was his helmet, why isn't he wearig it?

If it's not for him, then I can understand but I still dont know why riders dont wear helmets. Hell, I see guys all the time in shorts.

really what do you care? If a rider chooses to not wear a helmet or wears shorts it doesn't affect you. Yes I am a rider and I have gone down. When I went down I was wearing jeans which shreaded right off my legs. Unless your wearing full leather pants or fully armored pants (which virtually no one does) your not going to do much better than someone in shorts. Im a huge advocate of letting the rider decide what kind of protection he/she wants to use (helmets included).

from someone who always wears full gear and has laid down a bike. It amazes me how people dress on a bike. I live at the beach, and so the bikes are out in full force right now. I DO NOT go a day without seeing a guy in a t-shirt, shorts, and sandals riding serious machines

I can't imagine how bad my last wreck would have been without gear.......my helmet has a HUGE ding in it, jacket has rips, gloves are a little torn......

I'm finishing up a week of vacation in Maui and it's prety amazing how many bikers I've seen here with just shorts and a T-shirt. I've seen this one silver/black CBR600RR with the same low 20's rider multiple times, sometimes wearing shorts others a swimsuit. Mostly sportbikes, the cruiser/Harley riders mostly wear jeans and a T-shirt. Helmets are also optional in Maui since I've seen plenty of riders without.

None the less, I'm with my wife and daughters but would have loved to ridden the east and west coastline drives with a motorcycle. Travelling to Hana would have cool on a bike versus a Hyundai

Trust me, I don't care. Wear what you want. I'm not the one who will be scooping you off the street.

The purpose of my thread was to find out why a helmet was on the side of a moving bike and the rider wasnt wearing it.

we do have a helmet law here. But if we did not, g/f would not climb on without a helmet and a backrest...

I wear all of my gear all of the time (almost ). I do chuckle when I see riders wearing minimal gear. It bothers me a bit b/c they give other riders a bad name... however, if they go down... one less squid on the road

Except driving dangerously on the street puts others in danger anyway. You have no control over where and when you will meet up with other vehicles traveling the same roadways. Not to mention oil, water, sand, nails and other obstructions that can cause you to lose control.

Just my on it...

This reminds me of a story here last year where a motorcyclist was barrelling down the toll road (triple digits) weaving between vehicles and eventually lost control. They found they guy dead with his head bashed in after he (apparently) lost control and hit the side railings.

His helmet was connected to the back of his motorcycle.

I do ride and I think it is dumb not to wear a helmet. I did it once just to see what the big deal was and at highway speeds I couldn't breath or keep my eyes fully open. Plus the wind noise is deafening. I don't get it.

Could someone who does not ride with a helmet fill me in?

when I rode in Montana last year, we rode through Glacier Nat'l and I rode without a helmet since we were riding below 30 mph (yes, I know I can still get myself killed). It did not feel right but once we got out of the Park, I had my helmet back on. I do cringe when I see a squid or even a Hog rider wearing short... Worse is when the young chicks are on the back of a crotch rocket in flip flops. I would never let a passenger get on with flip flops....

Their choice not to wear gear, my choice not to respect them. Most of them just want to look cool. I have many friends who ride and race. In my group, the real motorcyclists all wear proper gear at all times. I'm talking about people who are out when it's 35 degrees. The same people who are out in leathers even when it's a hundred degrees outside... putting tens of thousands of miles each and every year. Not some young punks on sportbikes or bored dentists on their Harleys because they are going through a mid-life crisis.

Virtually no one does? Want to bet? On joy rides, EVERY single time I'm on the bike, I'm in a 1-pc leather suit, race boots, race gauntlet gloves, back protector and, of course, helmet. When I commute, I have another set of full gear that go over my work clothes. The same can be said about a few of my riding buddies. Just because you may not do it yourself or not see many people do it, you shouldn't assume that "virtually no one does."

Oh and it does affect us, all of us. Another accident in the newspaper, another story I have to hear people in my life telling me how dangerous it is. Beyond that, it also affects the statistics, insurance, people's perception, etc. Gear can be the difference between walking away or going for an ambulance ride. I just don't know why people don't wear gear. But again, their choice not to wear, my choice not to respect it.

I have to make a comment in regards to helmet use: Wear the damn thing. Always. No exceptions.

I been riding for over thirty years and have amassed several hundreds of thousands of kilometers on various bikes. And never once have I not worn a helmet. Why am I such a proponent of helmet use? Because I've laid in a hospital bed for days surrounded by people who wondered if I would survive. I've suffered a massive head injury where I lost the use of speech, coordination, and mobility. And it took me a year of intensive therapy to get most of it back. It could have been much, much worse if I had not worn a helmet. A helmet that did exactly what it was designed to do. Until the manufacturer requested to have it back for research, it horrified me to look at the damage to it.

I'll never understand why people think not wearing a helmet looks cool. To me, being dead or a drooling vegetable looks a hell of a lot worse.

Terry

i'll respond cause i put about 10,000 miles a year on my 2 bikes
(2005 Honda GL1800, 2010 Honda Fury)
i took a Motorcycle Safety Foundation class. One of the best classes as a biker you'll take. they PREACH safety.
i got 3 helmets i always wear.if i got a spare (on the 1800) i put it in the saddlebag if i'm gonna pick someone up.
i got a 2 Shoeis full faces and a Z1R modular.
plus i don't care if its 110 out or 30 degrees out put on some kind of protective coat. personally i like mesh coats but thats me. leather works too. or they'll wear sandals to ride in. I ride in my steel toe work boots.
