Basic OBDII Reader, Clears Codes- $19.99
Trending Topics
Some of them are expensive cause they have more features like data list, can pull SRS/ABS codes, etc.
These basic code readers are usually around $50 at stores so this is a good deal for checking and clearing check engine lights.

No yours don't. The ECU will clear the MIL if the issue causing the MIL was an intermittent condition or the problem causing the MIL is repaired, but the original code (DTC) stays in memory until cleared via an OBDII tool (e.g. reader or Honda Diagnostic System, etc.).

same with our ('04) F250 work truck and a wheel speed sensor, just repaired, reset ECU, no more light..
it has everything to do with what kind of code its throwing.

there are short term codes, long term codes, and permanent codes.
the first two mentioned can be removed with an ECU reset aka battery disconnect..
the 3rd can be cleared with this tool, or the one at the auto parts store..

Sigh....
Someone should buy himself a Service Manual:
The DTCs are memorized in the EEPROM (non-volatile memory). Therefore, the memorized DTCs cannot be canceled by disconnecting the battery....
Page 19-44.
(DTC stands for Diagnostic Trouble Code).

No, you're not lucky.
You are not understanding the difference between ECU activation and clearing of the MIL vs setting DTCs.
The MIL can be reset by the ECU or a battery disconnect (or a tool). The DTCs can only be reset by an OBDII tool or the HDS, etc.
You still have DTCs stored (unless you've used a tool to clear them). The battery disconnects did not clear them.

Threw a CEL and lost a cylinder on the way to the office this morning. Luckily my new reader was waiting for me here at the office. I had my Accessport in the car but it won't read every code and it didn't read this one. The new reader did no problem. P0303 - cyl 3 misfire. Think I lost a coil pack.
