Audi A4

Just wondering...I see alot of A4 1.8T's around, and if ya chip them they are pretty quick.

Anybody have any experience with the A4 3.0 V6????
Are chips available...and how much more H.P. do you get with a chip in the V-6??
The 4 Banger is 170 HP and the 6 is 220 HP. What is a better buy for the money???

Just thinking....

If you are going to mod the car you can't beat the 1.8. The six has no turbo so chipping does very little. If you are leaving as is, of course the six will be a little nicer. Buy for the money is the 1.8

WELL.

I just got the apr chip for my a4 and it was a huge improvement. I was really pissed at myself for buying a slow car at first, but once i installed the chip (really its software) then i was happy again. Its a different car now and much more responsive. Still not a fast car but its good enough for me, for now.

I suppose the chip brings the car to high 14s in the 1/4 which is said on audiworld.com.
But I honestly think its more like low 15s, who knows.

I drove a V6 automatic and its a really nice car if you dont plan to mod, but not worth the price since you can just mod the 1.8t to be just as fast for cheaper.

A guy on our euro site has a APR stage 3 A4 (1999.5) and ran a 12.8. Not bad for a $4500 turbo swap

I've driven both the 1.8T and the 3.0 and if I were to buy one, I'd definitely go with the 1.8T...the car felt almost as quick stock as the 6 spd. 3.0, plus it's cheaper and more moddable.

if u like to mod, 1.8t....with chip and exhuast it is just as fast as the V6.

if u wanna stay stock, and have power all across the band, go with the v6

i personally would get the turbo, its much more fun....or, just get the new S4

chip alone makes the 1.8t pretty quick....adding a few more mods makes it even more fun. Adding a new turbo can make it scary fast as sellout pointed out.

I like the A4, but the lack of power is what stopped me.

yeah AUdi needs to step it up in performance if they want to compete. They used to be a decent value and a cool car with AWD. Now other manufacturers are putting out some great values, AWD and great performance...Audi needs to step up.

Rumor has it that the A4 will get more power end of this year in europe.

We will most likely see the increase power in 2005.

2.0T is what i heard.

Pretty much what everyone else said, but I would probably get a 3.0

Everyone always throws around the idea of a chip, but how many people actually get one? Plus, doesn't it automatically void your warranty?

Why would anyone sacrifice the warranty to make the car a little quicker. If you want a fast car, there are plenty of other options in that price range. I'd get a V6.

Not bashing A4s, I love em. We have a 99.5 in the family, and knowing that it wouldn't be touched mod-wise, we went with the 6 cylinder (2.8) at the time.

Lots of people have chips on their 1.8t... hell thats the reason why most buy it.

None of the dealers around me hassle people with chips, so i guess itdepends where you go.

Its kinda like saying if you get OBX headers then acura will void your warrenty. Sure they can, but most dont.

Yeah, but OBX headers won't kill your engine. They are just an exhaust manifold. At worst, they may crack, but they can be easily replaced or welded and will cause no damage.

My friend has a Jetta 1.8T with an APR chip. He's had it on for 2 years, and has had a host of engine problems from the chip. It took some time for the issues to show up, but running at a boost level the engine/turbo weren't designed for does put stress on the engine. It probably won't happen to 90% of the people, but it's a risk I wouldn't want to take on a ~$30k car. I'd personally go with the 3.0L. It's got enough power to make most people happy and it's smoother than the 1.8T.

I agree.

If you wanna play then you gotta pay. I wont be pissed at my dealer if someone fails and they wont cover me. I made my choice.

Nope. The car was out of warranty anyway. I think he had over 75,000 miles. I never asked what the final cost was, but he's back to the stock ECU

the engine internals are good for abotu 350 crank hp. A chip is pretty safe for the most part. Plenty of people have 0 issues with chips, but plenty of people have headaches too. When you mod, you have to be able to accept that things might go wrong.

yeah that's not really a complete kit...it uses the stock exhuast manifold, injectors and plugs. I don't think the stock injectors are really going to safely support more than 240 hp. For comparison, my complete ktit with that same turbo costs $4500...it used to cost $4000 when I got it. It has an inconel steel exhuast manifold (totally amazing piece, the highlight of this kit for sure) larger fuel injectors (440cc at 4 bar), plugs one step colder than stock, all oil and coolant lines needed and a new engine snub mount. Not to mention it comes with software....you get 91, 93, 100, 104, stock (8psi) and valet (0 psi and 4k RPM rev limit) programs and the home programmer to put programs on your ECU. They actually now have newer programming capabilites so you can just go through the OBD2 port and not remove your ECU to mess with programs. You can put 4 at a time on the ECU and switch programs though the cruise control buttons. My car put down 244 hp and 255 ft lbs at the wheels with this kit. I am still using the stock intercooler. The power delivery is super smooth, with the software and exhuast manifold, the power delivery feels like a torquey NA car. I am running 20 psi from about 3500 RPM to about 19 psi at 7200 RPM.
