Audi A3 - Neuspeed Engine Managment Upgrade - Results make you wonder

So I was looking at the dyno results for the Neuspeed Engine Management Upgrade for the Audi A3

Now the stock specs are: (per audi website)

  • 200 hp @ 5100-6000 rpm
  • 207 lb-ft @ 1800-5000 rpm

Neuspeed claims that their A3 after using their Engine Management Upgrade is
  • max 252 hp
  • max 297 ft-lb torgue
Do those numbers seem kind of high to you? This is a 2.0L FSI Turbocharged Engine.

The thing with this dyno is that they DON'T specify if this car had any other mods on it so it's VERY MISLEADING.

For all we know it could have an upgraded intake, headers and exhaust.

I guess what the big wonder is if these numbers are even possible on a stock A3 using this upgrade???

The turbo boost is electronically controlled right? They probably boosted it quite a bit with this reflash. Without knowing if they used any supporting mods, it's hard to know how they got the numbers.

The graph looks to me like a turbo that is too small for the boost it's asked to provide. The torque peaks early but runs out of steam when it can't provide enough air to the engine at higher RPMs.

Learn something new everyday. I didn't know that's a symptom of a underpowered turbo application.

Does this mean the engine needs a larger turbo? Or does it mean that for this engine/turbo combo it's not properly tuned.

Pressure doesn't make power, air mass does. X pounds of fuel requires Z pounds of air.

The turbo has a limit to how much air it can pump. If it's pumping more air than the engine requires, it builds pressure. In this case, it peaks at about 3400rpm but doesn't pump enough air to sustain pressure at the higher rpms.

There are two ways to flatten that torque curve:
1) lower the boost
2) bolt on a bigger turbo

For the stock application, the turbo is properly sized. It's small enough to minimize turbo lag but large enough to feed the engine sufficient air at max boost. However, with the higher boost level, the turbo becomes too small.

My only concern with adding that much boost to a VW motor is the risk of the infamous VW reliability biting me in the ass.

2.0t has been getting insane amount of power just by a reflash. Neuspeed isnt the only tuner who is making big gains out of it.

Even APR has. http://www.goapr.com/Audi/products/e...rade_8pa3.html
252hp/303lb-ft (crank)

These tuners arent new, they do plenty of testing and research before allowing the public to use it. I havent seen any issues with 1.8t that have been chipped, mine included.

Turbo tuner tend the lean out the mixture at high revs and high boost as they are very rich (to protect the motor) at WOT.

It's very easy to kick up power in turbo cars. I had an 89 Toyota Supra Turbo that made 199 RWHP stock and 258 RWHP with only a 3" turbo back exhaust, K&N FIPK and manual boost controller set to 10 psi (up from ~6 psi).

My wife wants an A3 so we may go drive a DSG model soon.
