Auction question

What is the difference between "above" and "avg" at a typical Manheim auction ? I see a $5,000. price difference below. All 4 cars are black in color.

How's the quality of the "remarketed" cars sold at these auctions ?

01/15/09 MANHEIM Factory $25,250 17,212 Above BLACK OB 6G A Yes
01/15/09 MANHEIM Factory $24,500 37,707 Above BLACK 6G A No

01/15/09 MANHEIM Factory $19,200 30,403 Avg BLACK 6G A Yes
01/15/09 MANHEIM Factory $18,000 35,250 Avg BLACK OB 6G A Yes

Above will be cars that are higher in demand and are in better condition.

A lot can go into it, but black is the most popular color for high end cars, so you will see them selling at a higher cost.

Most of the remarketed cars are just basically off lease cars from the manufacturer that go through a "specific make" sale.

Example: Every month our Milwaukee manheim auction has a Lexus and Acura sale, there are roughly 300-400 of each make running through that are off lease cars, brought to the auction and cleaned up for other dealers to buy whether they are franchise dealers or independent dealerships.

What kind of vehicle are you looking for?

I should have mentioned the car in question is a 2006 Infiniti M35x.
Helping a friend with some basic research on the car and where to buy. This person wants a good deal in this tough economy.

I have seen Certified cars going for around $25,000 at Infiniti dealers. I was a little surprised that "above" cars sold for $25k at auction. That would mean a dealer would have to sell the same car for @15 percent more to make a decent profit. They would have to ask $28,000 to flip the car.

A lot goes into above-avg. prices.

Options are a big thing - avg may be something w/out tech package, sport package, nav, journey package, etc.

Where the above will be a fully loaded one.

If I was your friend, I'd wait a few more months on the M's, quite a few of them will hopefully come off lease soon and flood the used car market The 3 year leases will be ending about now-summer.

Are the M35x's in the Manheim auctions "rejects" that Infiniti dealers don't want to put on their lot for one reason or another ? An Infiniti dealer told me they only keep the cream of the crop for their lot. No dents, scratches, worn tires, chipped windshield, smoker car, etc.

Any informed replies appreciated !

Not necessarily. It might just be because the dealership is full and doesn't have the capacity to have any more inventory. I would not be afraid of buying off lease cars, I have done so numerous time and have always had nothing but a success. You just have to make sure to look it over closely and do your hw like with any other vehicle purchase.

Can anyone confirm that auction prices for 2006 M35x's have jumped $ 2,000 compared to early February ? My contact said new car dealers are buying more cars from auctions since they are seeing fewer trade ins as a result of new car sales being down 40 percent.

Please accept my on auction cars.

I bought my RL as a lease turn in (at an Alabama dealership) from a Florida auction via a broker.

The broker was nice enough to give me some intell on the process... from what I saw a lot of these cars are priced low due to cosmetic damage that ranges from dents, scratches, interior stains/damage, broken mirrors, bad tires, on and on... none of which shows up on car fax.

The broker runs Ga Best Car Deals and I watched the process from when the transport truck shows up and his team painting, polishing, and repairing the cars to "like new" status then taking pictures and putting them on the lot.

I have had no issues with my RL other than a broken side mirror which they replaced before I bought it. I still have some normal wear on the interior and I put new tires on it.

Just keep your eye out as you are shopping.

^What do you think dealers do with the trade-ins that they get? Same thing. They recondition cars to make them look good and sell them to make a profit. That is the used car business. Who wants to buy a car with a 5" scratch on the bumper?

I've bought PLENTY of cars off lease from auctions, I pay very close attention to paint lines to make sure it's never been in an accident and I personally don't mind spending $600-800 on tires if I can save $5K by buying from the auction.

I hear ya and agree 100% with this statement.

I personally don't mind spending $600-800 on tires if I can save $5K by buying from the auction
But people should educate themselves before going, for example looking for the factory stickers on the body panels, seams in the door jams, fluids leaking, paint lines (poor blend jobs)....

And to address this question:
^What do you think dealers do with the trade-ins that they get?
I'd like to think we would get a better quality repair from the dealer, but I have little faith in them.
