Anyone ever owned Crown Vics or other V8 american sedans??

i flipped my legend for a nice profit and now im looking for another sedan. i checked out a nice mercury grand marquis the other day and i really want a nice american sedan now. the police use crown victorias too so they must be pretty sturdy cars??

do these have any problems. how bad is the gas mileage with that v8 engine? im specifically looking at the 92-97 year range of any lincoln, ford, or mercury sedans, im probably just gonna own it for a while and flip it again

I drove plenty of Crown Vics and Grand Marquis while working at Hertz during the mid-90s (which coincides with the model years you are in search of).

As far as I know, those cars are of fairly high quality (unlike many other Fords) and seemingly in demand by the motoring elderly.

As far as fuel economy goes, they did not seem much more thirsty than the V6 Taurus of the same time period. IIRC, it seemed to have some long gearing which enabled respectable fuel economy for a V8 powered boat.

They are pretty reliable. Solid cars...they have been making them for so long that they had better have all the kinks out by now!!
My dad owned a few Town Cars back in the day. I loved them. Smooth and queit....like sitting on a sofa.

Ya, what everyone is saying so far I can backup. I have known a few people to own them. They are well built cars!

I once test drove a Crown Vic with the Sport package. I guess it was an '05 or '06 model, not sure. That thing was tits. In black it looked like an FBI car or something.

Ridiculous room inside. You could get four kids in the backseat easy. The model I drove actually had climate control on the steering wheel (fan speed and temp) in addition to audio and cruise control. Theoretically you'd never have to touch the dash.

It drove...how I expected it to drive. Like a huge sedan. Very smooth though. They were really making deals on them too.

What do they drive like? Do they handle decently? Good torque? I've always been curious.

Aside from the Town Car I rented last year, the Crown Vic/Grand Marquis is the only car I have driven that would never betray the fact that freeways have expansion joints. It really feels like it floats on air.

I owned a chevy caprice back in high school... it was fast and sturdy. I would go for a grand marquis than the crown vic if you had to choose between the two.

i was curious, we aren't allowed to buy the police p71 package for crown vics. but are we allowed to add the severe service package if we buy a new crown vic from ford? the severe service package is what taxis use, heavy duty suspension/shocks, tranny cooler, oil cooler and other stuff that i can't really remember that would help out with continous running all day.

Crown Vics are Awesome! You can pull a trailer with one. Cheap, fully evolved, comfy and decent MPG.

But you'll have to get your ears stretched, wear a hat, slump down real low in the seat, and leave your blinker on if you want to drive one.. :killer:

it is a little weird to see 20 yr old wants to drive something so "grandma". Q45 could be a better alternative but to each his own.

I used to work as a limo and sedan service driver, and have seen cars with 500k mi on original engine. These cars are reliable...I would look for a well maintained Crown Vic that was former state highway patrol car- police package, well maintained, and easy hwy miles. Steer clear of former cabs, livery cars, or city police.....

My aunt had a 95 Crown Vic. They put 160K miles, & 10 years of NYC wear on it. The only thing major to go out was the AC & leather interior.
My mom had an 89 Crown Vic. It was her first car & had it 5 years & had over 180K miles & still was a tank. It was actually stolen by someone.
I had a 99 police Crown Vic for a few months as well. It seemed well built, traded it for a truck.
My friends in NYC also had an 88 Town car. This thing was a beast! Nasty red interior, but tons of room, & ran & ran & ran. Tranny finally died & they junked it.
Overall they are good cars.

I've actually been going to Government surplus auctions around the city to see if I could pick up a unneeded Police Interceptor for cheap, like under $1000... Probably be worn out and have holes in the dash where the police computer was set up, but I think it would be fun as hell to own and drive one...

I'd say find a good Crown Vic and scoop it up

Or a Maruader with a Kenne Belle supercharger

i'd vote for a caprice/roadmaster...you have the whole arsenal of gm motors at your disposal. you should be able to find a lt1 police package equipped caprice floating around for pretty cheap, drop a t56 behind it and you're straight.

My uncle has a 99 Crown Vic and that thing is awesome. He has headers, exhaust, intake and sent his ecu out to get flashed. he also changed his gears to 3.90's. The thing freaking moves, does great on gas and sounds like a stang. I love the shit out of it.

I haven't owned any Ford Lincolns, or Mercs, but I used to have a Chrysler 300C with the 340hp V8 Hemi. That thing GUZZLED gas. I got no more than 12 miles to the gallon... of course it was all in the way I drove it too..

I also had a Caddy SLS with a V8 Northstar engine. That thing did better on gas than the 300, but still no comparison to a Japanese V6 or I4.

The Crown Vic is still body on frame, isn't it? Are there any other sedans using this construction?

I had a 4.6 V8 tbird before the CL... Got it w/ 14K miles and drove it till 136K miles. It only had 200hp (or so) so it got around the same gas mileage as my CL (22/23... 26 on highway trips)....

The crown vic's w/ the 4.6 are great cars...

yea the only reason im thinkin about em is because they are realllly cheap, around 2000 on craigslist. i only need a car to get around for a while before i sell my integra and stack up enough to get something really clean. this is another "transition" car

and to the guy who asked about my legend, i picked up a 95 legend LS for like 3200, super good deal. i really should have kept but the whole head gasket issues kind of scared me, and i sold it for 4100 so i made a nice profit for only owning it 2 weeks. even thought i have around 4 to spend on another car id rather just get something cheap so i dont have to care about dents and shit like that

My mom has had some experience with these. She works for a company that gives out cadillacs for free as compnay cars. She also gets a new one every two years She had an 03 Caddy Deville (I learned to drive on it with my permit) and that thing was FAST. It was a total grandmom car but it was smooth and drove really nice. Now normally she gets one every two years but they gave her the option of keeping the Deville for longer and letting her get the 06 DTS which she did. This is also a very very nice car. Much better looking then the old one and its smoother and just as fast. She will be getting another one this November.

Police Departments, Municipalities, and Cabbies prefer them for a reason.

They are built like a tank.

whats the realistic gas mileage for a v8 crown vic or marquis?? if the mileage is so bad i dont understand why cab drivers would use them when they could use more gas efficient cars like camrys, etc

I'm not sure, but my 3800lb tbird with the same 4.6V8 got 21-22mpg and up to 26mpg on long highway trips (like from MA to FL)... Pretty much the same as my CL.

Crown Vics are nice for being able to do a bit above the speed limit and generally be ignored by the police.

Get a couple of antennas for the trunk (not hooked up to anything) and you can perpetrate!
