Any Thoughts on Purchase of '02 TL Type S

I'm am very close to buying a 2002 TL Type S w/ 35K miles and wanted to see what some of you thought about the price. It's stock except for aftermarket crome rims, not sure what type. Any thought would be appreciated.

Visit 2nd generation TL or CL forums, in the "Problems & Fixes" section. If you still want one after that trip through hell, then tell us the price.

Haven't seen any pics or know the true condition of the car but I haven't seen a price for a 2G TL-S like that in a while. That's pretty high, even with the low mileage and assuming that its in immaculate condition. Keep looking.

Unless the wheels are Volks or Works or something... even still its not worth it.

What would be a fair price on this if I could talk him down?

Not for me. Price too high. For a couple grand more you can have a 2004 TL.

I wouldn't take any second gen TL at this point. Tranny...tranny...tranny....

I'm hoping to have mine long gone before I experience the ever-looming first tranny failure.

Even though they have tranny problems, it should still have the warranty up to at least 100k, so actually you could probably have a few good years without having to worry about it. It would take me at least 6 years to rack up 65k more miles, and besides the tranny issue, I don't think there were many other problems. I think a low milage TL/CL-S would still be a great bargain if you can find one priced right (maybe <15k? and that's being generous).

Piece of mind, worry-free ownership > Warranty for a car known to have tranny problems/Spending time at the garage fixing a major problem

The warranty is not for 100,000 miles only, its also for 7 years or whichever is first. So a 2002 model's warranty begins in 2001, so it would last til 08, meaning it only has a year.

stupid loophole. My dad's CL-S is just about at 100k, so I completely forgot about the 7 year thing. they didn't increase that either after that lawsuit?

He just got his tranny replaced a few months ago for the first time though at ~90k mi. I don't think they're ALL bad, but given my dad drives like an old man, and it still needed to be replaced probably says something.

hes one of the lucky one.....everyone knows that a 2nd gen tl/cl = pos tranny....4speed/five speed they both break...(4speed is more reliable though)..mines been replaced twice, and i believe the owner of the record has 5 breaks on his tranny....

Not everyone has the "tranny" issue ... although Consumer Reports gives the 2nd gen TL a "poor" rating on transmission reliability. (cough cough ... I have 132 000km on my original transmission ... knock on wood)

And yes ... it's 7 years / 100,000 miles (it has been upgraded due to the OEM odometer being slightly off ... I can't remember the US figure, but it's 168 000km -- you have to do the math in miles)

Perhaps this thread would be better discussed in the 2nd gen TL subforum, as someone has already suggested.

I think I'm at ~187,000 kms and my original tranny it is showing signs of trouble in reverse, and trouble is creepy slightly and slowly into the forward gears.

No, not everyone has tranny issues, but enough that someone who is researching a car to purchase should take that into consideration.

Sorry to close this, but we cannot move between forums. Looks like you got some good feedback though.

Anyway, Car Talk is mainly for auto discussion of cars not covered by one of our forums. For the 2nd Gen TL section, feel free to follow this link... https://acurazine.com/forums/automotive-news-6/

As for the car itself. That seems pretty high. I'd snoop around a bit and possibly even look for a 2004 TL. I sold mine at a little under 75k miles so I could be rid of it before the tranny warranty expired. I had my transmission replaced a little under 40k... but the new tranny was smooth as butter. Still, I didn't want to take any chances.

FWIW, I sold the car for $17,500 and that was over a year and a half ago. Even though the car you're looking at has 40k less miles then mine did it's also a year and a half older and the 2008 models are coming out... meaning that car is 6 model years old now. I'm thinking you shouldn't be paying over $15k for that car.
