Another year, another car insurance thread

I have Progressive. Been happy for the last few years. No problems. Then I get my 6 month renewal this weekend. It's being jacked up 9% for no reason on my part. It went up 3% in December also. After a phone call & getting no where I'm car insurance shopping.

Anyone have any experience with:

Florida No Fault
Nationwide
Or any cheap insurance providers.

State farm is not available in FL
Geco was always high on every quote I had in the past
I had AIG before also, but they were high too.

I just don't understand why it's so high. Over 30, I never had an accident & haven't had a claim in 5 years. No tickets either.

Thanks

I have State Farm and every year as my vehicle and I get older my insurance go up. I live in rural VA, age 34 and have never had a speeding ticket and paying $840 a year on a 2003 vehicle. I didn't pay that much a year when I was 16 and had a 3 year old car.

You live in South Florida and rates in the area are pretty crazy.

LOL, please don't cry. Ours went up 81%. You read that right. After two speeding tickets on my part, one on my wife's part, and an accident on her part, we have to pay out of the ass.

Now I try to drive the speed limit whenever possible. If I do speed, it's never more than 5 MPH over. I wonder what my new TL will do to that when I get it in June.

BTW, we have USAA (my wife is in the military).

No Florida No Fault!

Allstate (I pay a ridiculously low amount)

Or if youre going to go cheap do e-surance.com My brother stoped on the brakes in my Dad's X5 and a surfboard smashed the windshield They replaced it with BMW glass at local shop (not a stealership) without a problem.

I suppose the manin thing I figured out is all insurance companys suck and give you a hard time(or at least someone on epinions a hard time), so why not just get the cheapest.

State farm will only insurure your car if you had a policy before they stopped, or have other insurance with them like home owners.

I just got my rates and they rose about 3% as well-with no change to my record. I was told that rates in TX were on the rise across the board and that there was nothing that I could about it.

Had State Farm....nobody could come close to it.

After I got married, I got a price from them. Then I went to AAA and got a price from them. AAA was by far the cheapest for both me and my wife's car.

But there are differences and I'm looking into it now to see if AAA is worthwhile. State Farm will do 2 policies, one for my car and one for my wife's. But we get the multi-car discounts on that. With AAA, there is 1 single policy that will cover both cars. I think the difference is that with AAA, any accidents or whatever will affect the whole policy, not just on one car. The policy doesn't differentiate who the main driver is. At least with State Farm, an accident would only raise the premiums of one car. But the difference was like $400 a year! So I'm with AAA for now.

Never had a problem with State Farm though. Never made a claim through AAA yet.

It's not your fault but does the word HURRICANE mean anything to you? Think about what the loss ratio is running for Progressive in FL for the past 3 years and all the cars they have had to total because of it. Even with CAT reinsurance, it still is a pretty big hit for Progressive. I know because I used to work for them and FL was one of the biggest exposures they had.

I can buy that. However they need to decrease their costs then. The other companies I called so far are $200 cheaper everyone of them. Why does Progressive need to rasie my rates & these other companies don't?

That's called excessively high operating cost.
They should find ways to cut their costs rather then raising the rates of good drivers with clean records that have had Progressive for 2+ years.
When I called they didn't care that I was paying a higher rate or leaving.

I know personal experience shouldn't account for anything other than opinions, but stay away from AIG. Their customer service stinks and so does their premium rate.

To me it looks like State Farm is smoking crack. I'm 29, wifey is 26. I currently pay Ameriprise $670 every 6 months for two cars. No accidents, no tickets, insured for over 7 years. For some reason my premium went from 620 every 6 months to $670, I called them to inquire and they said they got some new ratings on certain cars so my rate went up even though i had no violations or accidents.

Allstate quoted me 577 every 6 months with slightly better coverage than Ameriprise. I did a quote with the same coverages with State farm and these bastards want $850 every 6 months! Why? I have no idea, but they definetely won't be getting my business.

I'm probably going to switch to AllState, but I feel kind of bad leaving Ameriprise, I have been with them for nearly 5 years with no problems whatsoever and very nice reps. The only drawback is they are not open on the weekends.

So far eveyone I called is at the 800-850 mark for 6 months. Full coverage 2 cars.
Amica is the cheapest so far & they give 1 year policy's which I like.
I'll might go with them.

BTW Progressive wants $1050/6 months

They have eliminated expenses. Progressive is one of the most hated insurance companies by Agents because they pay so little in commissions. They also promote their direct business which also helps the consumer by cutting off the middle man (Agent). What you see is Progressive having to raise rates because 5 years ago, they were underpricing themselves against the others to gain market share. Then, when the Hurricanes hit, they were one of the most exposed companies. Actuaries are gonna raise rates to offset the losses. Now it is the turn of the other companies to underprice themselves, especially the ones that were not hardly hit by the hurricanes. It is all a cyclical business. The irony is that Progressive encourages people to "SHOP AROUND". So obviously, take take them at their word and shop around like you are doing. my

One thing to remember about when choosing insurance companies is customer service!

I pay a little extra every 6 months for my policy with USAA. But, whenever I have an issue, whatever it is, they take care of it without a question. I have been in a few accidents, all of them other parties fault, and USAA handled everything beautifully.

From the sounds of it, Progressive doesn;t care about you. So when you are shopping around, take note of their customer service and feel them out for what they may be like when you need to call upon them to help you.

Thread resurrect......
So since I posted this in 06 I have had Amica. Well they just skyrocketed my rates for no fault on my part. Said they rates changed in FL. 6 years with them & they didn't care one bit about me as a customer. Couldn't offer me anything to stay. So I went with 21st century starting this month. $885 for my 2 cars for 6 months. Best I could get.
My rant though is how much of a racket insurance is.
I have my car & a old 93 explorer. Car has full coverage, truck has only liability.
If I say I use the truck to commute & the car for pleasure my quote was $150 cheaper then if I said I use the car to commute & the truck for pleasure.
What kind of crap is that? What if I use both equally? And the liability for the 93 explorer is higher then that for the car? Again WTF?

You tell them you drive your more expensive car more often, obviously insurance will be more expensive than if you tell them you drive your beater more often.

I don't know how much your insurance has gone up, but if it's the first time in 6 years they've raised it, that's pretty good.

I don't quite see what you're complaining about, you couldn't expect your insurance to stay the same price forever, could you?

i pay $538 for 4 cars

2001 CLS
2003 CLS
2000 E320
1991 Montero

i have liability on everything , uninsured motorest coverage and im covered for 50K per car if i hit someone.

Out of all the cars i pay the most for the 1991 Montero and i was told by my insurance company that its because older cars lack safety features hence the chances of someone getting hurt in a accident are higher.

Rates are for 6 months and im in WA State with AMERICAN FAMILY INSURANCE

Amica raised my rates for the last 3 years actually. I stuck with them because I had a claim from 4 years ago & it only fell off this year. Their rates were the same as anyone else with the claim added in so why bother changing.
So this year they jacked it by $900/year. That was absurd when all other companies I got quotes form were way under that amount & the company I've been with for 6 years didn't care to keep me.

Try AAA. I've had them for over 10 years.
best rates I have ever gotten and great service .
Plus I get 20% off of my house and 12% off of car insurance by combining them.
Paying 800/year for the viper. Full coverage with 500 deductible

Wow. My BMW costs me 310$+tx a year in insurance. Premium dropped like a rock when I id let use my FICO score i consideration for a quote. However a part of the insurance is public here. No fault as well.

Luckily, my rates have steadily dropped over the past two years. That probably has a lot to do with getting older though

State Farm, 23yo male, one ticket (off in June ), $500 deductibles and $100k/$300k liability/uninsured on the CL, ~$780 every 6. Down from $1500 every 6 (with less coverage) from two years ago. Once that ticket comes off my record, itll drop a bit further.
