The high ball is a cool bike without a doubt.

Not for the last twenty-five or so years anyway. Many motorcycles, particularly the Japanese products, are constructed of such close tolerances and built so well that they often require less maintanence than a car. Valve adjustments are so easy they can often be done in less than an hour, and I've personally seen many motorcycles that have never required an adjustment even if they are approaching 100 000 miles. The majority of my riding friends ride the adventure style bikes, and many have traveled far greater distances with these bikes that their cars. Many of the their Africa Twins, Varaderos, Transalps, V-Stroms, and the odd GS have well over 200 000 km. on them. I have an Africa Twin sitting in my shop that has over 200 000 miles on it. It's been throughout the world several times and is still on it's original engine.
Oh I know there are a lot of riders like you out there (and I wish I was one) but to me it seems there's less riders like you and killer compared to casual riders. I guess it also depends on the type of bike as well. Most adventure & cruising/touring bikes will have higher mileage while most street bikes are lower. I guess with me being more in the street bike crowd, most bikes I see are sold before they even hit 5 figures on the ODO. A quick scan of eBay or the local CL ads can confirm that. I mean, I've owned 3 bikes in the last 4 years and have never owned one with more then 5k miles. My Aprilia had 2200 when I sold it . I am planning to change that with the Ducati since I finally found a bike I absolutely love... but still, it will likely never see incredibly high mileage readings on the ODO but it will still need more frequent maintenance then my truck.

BTW, the new Motorcyclist had an adventure round up.... I was excited to read about the GS650. Finally, an adventure bike I may be able to sit on with a part of my foot on the ground!!
