All these BMW purchases around here lately...

...have rekindled my desire to get one. Unfortunately I'm too poor to get a new one, so I'm looking at older ones. I've wanted a E34 540 ever since I got my liscense and started looking into them again. Turns out there is a Canadian M540 for sale in NY thats already had all the import taxes paid and has a NY title, so it sounds like its federalized. Cars somewhat reasonable at 25k, but I'm sure I could get him down since I know its been for sale for awhile. I'd just need to sell my car first which is a pain.

Some one convince me not to do this.

Once you start getting offers for your CL Brett, you won't need any convincing.

My buddy is selling his 91 M5... but it has over 200k miles.

Since you a BMW tech now, maybe you can find a cheaper E34 and fix it up a bit.

Yea, little too much mileage.

I would, but I don't have the time to put the work into the car right now. Plus this car is really rare. Only 32 were made. Its pretty much a Euro M5 with a V8 in it. http://www.roadfly.com/bmw/classifie...6&sortby=&dir=

Those cars at this point are best left to guys with an extra spot in the garage and lots of money to waste fixin' stuff...probably not a wise choice if you need reliable daily transportation.

But no reason to lose the dream if that's not you right now.

Someone at my work is selling a 1998 Dinan 540. Has ~80K miles for $15K. Just throwing it out there.

From what I know it has an intake, exhaust, lowered and a limited slip.

You could get a a 2001 540 for around that price, however the mileage will be high if thats a problem.

Ahh.. just keep the CL and just get a 335i (or whatever is out at the time) when you get out of school

I'm really suprised that Acura hasn't picked up on the "Acura owner to BMW owner" trend... Acura seems to be the entry level luxury car of choice, but when people want to upgrade, there's nothing in Acuras lineup to go to... So people are forced to get a bmw, lexus, or infiniti...

<--- wants a new car too... Maybe when the 128i comes out next year...

I had NEVER been a BMW fan until last year. Test drives of the 330i, 335i, 545i, 645Ci, 550i and E70 X5 4.8 coupled with that free maintenance plan have made me an "advocate" of BMW products.

Though my last car purchase was my 07 AV6, the wife and I are positioning ourselves for the purchase of a 550i in a couple of years (ideally a "leftover" E60 550i).

Brand loyalty is big with me, and I really wanted to stick with Acura for my next car. The cars are bulletproof (except the transmissions ) and the customer service is fantastic. And as far as "luxury" goes, I think they are right up there with BMW as far as build quality, fit & finish, refinement, features, amenities, comfort, etc... Problem is, they just don't offer anything that is as fun to drive as BMW, or some of their other European counterparts. High horsepower + RWD/AWD is the key, and Acura just doesn't offer any mid-level vehicles in those configurations. Its ashame too, cause if they did I probably would've bought it.

i would love to get a 335 or even 328, but one of course i don't have the money and also i would assume if i got a bmw, isn't it a lot more expensive to insure a bmw than a honda/acura or even a nissan/infiniti?

I imagine the 335i might demand an additional premium, owning to it being turbocharged. Like its E46 predecessor (exc. M3), the E90 should rate well in terms of injury, collision and theft. IIHS.org

That's my vote too. Keep it for a bit more. Then you won't have to worry as much about the cost. The CL is still treating you well....so long as your dad doesn't come close to it.

I was considering getting a 2001 528I when I traded my CL, but I couldn't swing a good enough deal for that and a MDX. The Acura dealer was not as flexible on price as the Nissan dealer.

You may wanna look up info on nikasil engine blocks if your gonna buy a pre 1997 bmw v8.

In some areas it wasn't as big of a problem, but high sulfer in fuel in parts of the country caused many of those v8's to wear pretty quickly.
Some engines never had problems, many were replaced with alusil engines by bmw. It may still be a great car.

Its actually costing me less. I was with Geico and I was paying around $450 every six months for full coverage on my '01 CL Type S. They quoted me at around $630 to insure my new 335i. I switched to Nationwide, and now I'm paying around $430 every six months, same coverage, for the BMW. So I'm actually paying about $50 less a year to insure the Beemer. According to my buddy in the insurance business, companies tend to give a hefty discount on their rates for new cars.

Damn right about that....if they had offer the TL in RWD (Acura, you're hearing us, but you're not listening??)...it would have been so cool. Everything the TL has was good expect the fun factor.

I'm test driving the 335i coupe tomorrow. I have a feeling I will be walking away with a new car (if they have the right config). I'm still debating on waiting to test drive the g37 though.

The car has an 4.4 alusil motor out of a 2001 540, so now worries there.

You don't really need to test drive it... I didn't. Just ask Shad, Crazy or me. We could just tell you right off the bat, its fast.

I get all the major car mags like cd, motortrend, road and track, automobile. There have been times the 335i has been used a long term tester and both times the issue of overheating from the turbos have come about. Its in the latest issue one of those mags. I'm too lazy to go upstairs and find out which. No doubt it is a glorious engine but this guy hates to spend time at the dealer so I will pass at any turbo BMWs or turbos all together.

^ do more research.

They dont overheat anymore since BMW added oil coolers to the automatics with sport package.

All manuals get them and had them since the start of their release.

Is Perillo good to work with? Their pricing seems pretty good on used/CPO cars... Curious on the buying experience.
