Advice on potential trade...

Would you guys make this trade?

My car:

2008 TL Type-S
47,xxx miles
1st owner
No problems with it
Paid off

Potential Car:

2009 BMW 335i xDrive Sedan
Space Gray/Black Dakota leather
Loaded with every option including M-Sport package
1-Owner, personal lease, clean carfax
27,xxx miles
Excellent condition
CPO 6yr/100,000
$15,xxx after TL trade financed at 3.9%

Considering I have a good amount of money put away that is not being touched... Should I do it?

I would personally keep the TL that is paid off, drive it until the wheels fall off and save money for your future.

It's not so much I want a new car, I just want this one very badly.

And obviously the only argument here is being able to save money. But, like I said, I already have a decent amount saved (>$15K) that I'm not going to touch. Is ~$300/month really going to hurt in terms of saving? Idk...

Just based off of prices I'm seeing in a loose Autotrader search I'm guessing your 335 is mid $30's and they're offering $12-15k for the TL-S?

IDK, man, if the TL-S has been good to you ("no problems") - you're headed for problem country.

I'd keep the TL-S and invest the $15K.

I like being debt free.

Plus, the TL-S is still an awesome car.

There's the danger...never fall in love with a particular car on the lot.

Your math skills aren't very good... How can the 335 be mid 30s, I'm getting 12-15K for the TL, and I'll only owe $15K? They're giving me 19K for the TL and the 335 is $34,995.

Not to me, not anymore anyway

I didn't. I've always wanted a Space Gray 335 M-Sport but I could never find one CPO. And then this one came along and just so happened to have every other option in it as well.

Well, I'm probably the last person who should be giving you advice since I sold my paid off TL to purchase my M5.

Can check the VIN to see if it's been replaced; should be on the CarFax as well if there's an open recall.

The 335 is notorious for fuel HPFP failure.....I have read about people replacing 3 or 4 of them. Regardless.....BMW is one of the finest cars I have owned. Also one of the worst to maintain. First world problems.

Well, if you're not happy with the TL anymore and this is the car you've always wanted... then get it.

It's got low miles and is CPO, so you should be fine for a while.

Oh I know, and BMW wasn't very...shall we say...quick about getting this issue corrected. But, it's my understanding that the performance of the recall work solved most of these issues.

ETA: If it's CPO the recall has to have been performed already.

personally I am not a big BMW fan but you will be the one driving it, maintaining it-, if you can afford it, then get it.

The HPFP issue has been resolved, the first owner took it in for the recall.

sell the TL privately if you want the 335 badly. It is a pain in the ass, but it could get you anywhere from an extra 3-5k to put towards a 335.

I also feel as though they're giving you too little for the TL.

I'd be happy with a paid off TL-S

Save your money, $300 doesn't seem like a big payment each month but it sure adds up quick!

No meh skills are not very good, and when I'm not trying very hard they're awful. But I was just trying to figure out if you were getting hosed on your trade, thanks for telling us.

I guess 19k on the trade is honestly pretty good. Usually dealerships try to hose you on the trade and tell you you're not going to get anywhere near the value of the car. In your case it looks like you're floating just below KBB (which is not saying much, I know...)

A paid off car that is fairly new with low miles and problem free vs. years more in debt.

I'd keep the TL.

I'm gonna be in car debt at some point anyway, it's not like I'm going to keep the TL forever. Might as well get rid of it while it's still worth good money, no? ...That's kind of where I'm coming from.

Well you just made your point there, there was no point in making the post now.

But on a side note for 300 a month how many years will you have to pay on that, isn't that like 10 years?

Just do like I do same as in the way of the samurai, be fully committed to what you are going to do in the space of seven breaths. Works like a charm.

If the 335 will make you happier go for it, my dad took my 2g type s and I bought a 3g base 6mt in the color combo I always wanted and I have never looked back.

It's your money brah. If you want it do it. I was a year away from paying off my TL and I got my G37. Now I pay about $100 more each month over my payment to pay this Infiniti off sooner.

Other things come to mind for me now, saving for a house and paying off all the other debt (just got married). I'd even sell my Infiniti and go down to one car to get closer to buying a house or debt free sans a mortgage.

Cars aren't going anywhere IMO, you can always find one to suit your wants. Best of luck to whatever you decide.

10 years? Damn, does anybody know basic math on this forum? LOL. It will be a 5 year loan. It'll be around $300/month with the sales tax and doc fees and shit factored in.

I really don't have my mind made up yet. If I did I would have bought it Wednesday night when I went to look at it.

Wait two weeks before you decide, the honeymoon might be the most exciting part and then nothing.

I do't think it's much of a trade up. It's a year newer and 20k less miles.

I wouldn't do it. Just keep your car.

BUT it sounds like you already made up your mind of getting it. and don't seem like digesting some wise advice in here.

Just get it and post the pics already. It's your money and don't really care about saving money at this point. Get it. 335 is actually one of the most fun cars to tune with. It's brutally fast even with couple mods with a tune. In terms of straight up performance, it's like 335>>the Great Wall>>TL-S.

Personally, Id save for another year, then get a 2013 3 series or a 2012 trade in - there always seem to be slightly used 1 year old 3 series on the lot here.

I guess it depends on what your priorities are. If you're looking to gain wealth, then obviously trading for a 1 year newer but 3 year old BMW isn't a wise move. If you have always wanted a grey BMW (you have only been driving for 10 years so it can't be that long of an urge), then get the BMW and ignore what we say.

I was buying houses at 25 and not BMWs and am very glad to have done that- didn't miss anything with no regrets. I guess now I could pop for an M5 if I wanted to, but I'm finding there's more to life than driving a new/expensive car.
