An addition to the family...
Hey man nice bike and im glad to see you have the gear. I bought my first bike about a year and a half ago and love it
A squid is a newbie usually that screws around w/o gear and has no idea what they are doing or going well beyond their skill level to impress Good luck with it

You definitely have to respect the bike and what it can do or you will go down. That's what everyone has told me and I'm sticking to it because I have no interest in feeling pavement at high speeds.
Motorcyclists in Ontario face more obstacles this spring than potholes and miserable riding weather. With motorcycle insurance premiums going up by as much as 40%, many riders are seriously thinking of parking their bikes this season. It's the reality of family budgets -- as much as we all love to ride, a heavier financial burden has to be weighed against other costs. Even for the hardcore riders, a few hundred dollars is going to make you think twice.
Leave it in storage
"Long time, experienced motorcyclists are saying they are going to leave their motorcycles in the garage this year and not ride," says Robert Ramsay, president of the Motorcycle and Moped Industry Council (MMIC.) "Thousands of potential riders are walking away."
Higher insurance premiums are scaring off scores of new riders too and that spells a challenging year for the motorcycle industry. Ramsay says in Ontario sales could drop by 10%.
Ya I would for sure respect the bike if I ever started to ride. I just worry about freak accidents like hitting a pot hole you dont see or something and hurting myself bad cause there is nothing around you on a bike. I would be careful though.

Wow, why is Ontario raising the premiums?
I'm going to call up my insurance company tomorrow and have them remove my insurance for my EX500 and add my f4i. Then I'll try to go get my bike registered and my plates transferred, so that I can legally go out for a ride this weekend

I am a HUGE car fan,.......so I dunno what would win out,.....a bike or a sporty car when I have the $$$ for it. I think learning to ride a bike would be a fun undertaking though. Im really interested in how different it will be to change gears etc compared to a car. An the acceleration on a bike must be really cool for sure, plus it must be a blast being out in the open air etc. I think its gonna happen haha.
Its really not tough to change gears on the bike. If you understand the concept of driving a manual, then you shouldn't have a problem riding a bike.
Acceleration is a huge rush especially when you're merging onto the highway

Im really interested to see how weird it would feel using the controls on a bike though. I guess it would take a little getting used to. UGH, I dont wanna have to get another license though. Such a pain in the butt, but I guess its a good thing to get,..........the rewards are so good. I am looking forward to the rush of accelerating onto a hwy etc for sure. Ok, new goals,......get bike license and get $$$ for a bike.
West6MT the whole shifting thing on a bike is easy to learn. The hard part is body positioning, leaning, and controlling that damn throttle. Telling ya I hop on my bike and hit some fav roads of mine and man its a feeling like no other. You are calm but excited....your mind is cleared, yet you are thinking of your positioning and surroundings.
If it something you can afford I highly recommend it...but as alot of ppl will say keep it save and try to control that right hand....lord knows that kinda trouble I have gotten myself into when I let my right hand run free.

Thanks for the info guys, I smell a new addiction coming on. VB,......worse than your love for cars,.........I dunno what I'm getting myself into but it sounds GOOD. Thanks for the recommendation sxlova, I think I will be able to afford it by next summer,....and I will be careful.
Its weird, learning to ride and getting a bike never really crossed my mind in a serious way before I guess. I would see a few at the auto show, go over and sit on them, etc........think to myself "I bet this would be loads of enjoyment" and then kinda forget about it. Two years ago there was a really nice Yamaha R1?,....it was blue and REALLY sweet looking. I spent a few mins checking it out. Lately I have found myself wondering if I really could get a bike. I think the enjoyment of riding (like you guys have said) would be worth it for sure,......but the insurace is insane up here now. A guy who does ride bikes told my dad he read somewhere that the cost to insure a hyabusa for someone my age could be as high as 12k year. WTF,..thats how much a new bike costs,...like a honda cbr 600 or whatever its called. I have not actually seen proof of this, but I wouldnt doubt it is far from the truth. The only reason I wouldnt get a bike within a year or two would be the cost of insurance. I have to look into seeing how much it would cost. Like I said above,.....I would guess it might be as high as 5k for me on a "beginner" type bike. That might hold me back,.......and the fact I want a bike that looks SEXY like a CBR something or other.
What is a good biginner bike? Is it stupid to get something like a 600cc CBR as a first bike,.........ie too much bike,.having just obtaining your license? I dunno much about bikes,.....sorry if these are dumb questions guys.

Those are not dumb questions West6MT. I have heard that bike insurance is insane in canada....what a shame
. Virtualbong has a good beginner bike kawaski 500ex, it has enough power to get you in trouble, but at the same time will let you get away with any mistakes you might make.
At the same time you can start off on a old 600cc bike, and move up from there. What it boils down to is staying within your limits, not trying to overdo things, and respecting the power of the bike. Take the MSF course if its offered up there (did wonders for me) and get out and practice.

I wouldn't mind the same jacket but in a Medium or Large. Probably Large.

virtualbong. don't do this right away, but when you feel comfortable doing it, go full throttle in first gear until you reach redline. Hold on though because you will get pulled back by the g force. It feels like you're going to slip off of the back. Thats just a testiment of the power of a 600cc sportbike.
I ride with 750s and 1000cc bikes and I have no problem keeping up.

I'm definitely going to go to a bike shop and see what sizes are out there. I could easily sell my jacket now for $150-$200 since they retail for $350 and get something new that fits me perfectly.

Thanks for all the info guys. I hope I dont have to wait too long before getting a bike,......just remembered my 20k worth of debt from university,......sigh. Hopefully within the next two years I will have a bike in the garage.
west, if you're worried about insurance, just go to progressive.com, if you have that in Canada, and get an online quote. You can put in different types of bikes just to get a feel for what it all costs.
