Acura TL-S or Eclipse GSX?

Well I thought I would ask for an opinion since I cannot make up my mind. I was wondering what would some of you guys pick if you were in the market for a car? Take into consideration that I'm still in college but I will be graduating in year and probably buying something new then.

The way I see it would be to buy the eclipse because it's really fun since it's turbo charged, but it might not be to realiable if I decided to mod it. Then there is the sick acura which would be very pimp since girls seem attracted to these cars around here. And it's reliable and sleek looking, but not as fun.

I've owned a gsx and a cl in the past and loved both, that's why it's very difficult trying to decide what to go with now.

So what would you guys go for 98 GSX or 02 TL-S?

I'd go with the TL-S, definitely. Pimp factor through the roof.

All the GSX offers you is speed, and a cop's eye on you at the turn of every corner.

If you're going to get the GSX and mod it, beware of crankwalk is all I gotta say. You will smoke clowns left and right if its tuned correctly, though.

Shit, I would say GSX for a project car and the TL-S as a daily driver. But then I'm in college too, I feel your pain. For a daily driver I would get the TL-S, its a pimpin car.

I would only get the GSX over the TL-S if I wanted a track car.

Yeah but I only have one year left in college and I thought it would be fun to have a fast sports car before I grow to old for these four cylinders. After college I plan on buying something new. One one hand I already owned a 1g gsx that made over 400hp but it was broke 80% of the time so that is what is keeping me away, but the car is cheaper and will save me a few grand. On the other hand the TL-S will cost more but will last longer and I wont have to worry about shelling out massive amounts of money to keep making it faster and to keep it running. Now if I could only find a pimp TL-S for around 12K in the midwest.

TL-S if it is still under warranty, but then again, they are two diffrent cars, if picking up girls is a factor in buying this car, then get a TL-S and drive it off a bridge

Lol, you're on an Acura forum...what do you think people are going to say?

Anyway, with that aside, the TL-S is a more grown up car. The GSX is a ricer these days and the older girls are not into ricers. At least not the hoodrat ones, but whatever you want I guess.

I agree with you on the first part but I hate it when people abuse the word ricer.

I can appreciate that, but unfortunately it still the fastest way I know to describe what I see everytime I see a GSX these days. I saw one yesterday with those Altezza tail lights and an overdone Wings West wing and body kit poorly fitted to the vehicle. It appears to me that most of these cars have fallen into the hands of kids who throw all sorts of funky crap on their car not knowing much about what they were doing, which is truly shameful because of how nice the car is.

However, I digress a little bit. In all seriousness if the word ricer offends you, I apologize. Can you tell me how you would rather I describe the above in a concise manner?

What you described above, is a ricer, but the car itself is not ricer, nor is any car it just the way people "mod" it.

I need to post pics up of the first gen to give you guys an idea of how I modded my car. FiftyFive you have an Evo so you must know a few things or so about the DSM's, have you ever heard of the fp3065 and the green? I ran both and the tranny didnt like all the power.
I personally dont care what people think about the cars I drive I just happened to notice that more girls tended to like the acura cl that I had compared to the eclipse.
So far both forums are biased to the cars they own. I've had both so it's very difficult to decide and if I get either car there is nothing more that I hate than rice so you wont be seeing any on any car that I have ever owned.

I know what the fp3065 and im not sure if by the green you mean another type of turbo, because there is an evo green turbo. In the end your the one that is going to have drive the car everyday and put up with it, so just think it through dont let too many different opinions cloud your judgment. Get what you will be happy with in the long run.

from my understanding of the DSM's the 95/96 is the prone 2g turbo model that has a problem with crank walk.

if it was me i would do the GSX, alot more fun then the TL.

definitely, no question about it. TL is kind of an old man, wannabe 3 series with not a lot of power and some fancy exhaust/wheels. you'd have so much more fun with the GSX because of the stock turbo. it's also a coupe which right away makes it sexier than a 4 door. go to www.club3g.com and find out more about the GSX, they'll know plenty more about it than anyone here would. plus most people here are acura fanatics so you already know the answer you'll get.

The 95-99 eclipse turbos are prone to crank walk. Crank walk is when the crank shaft becomes off balance and begins "walking" instead of spinning. No one knows for sure why this is, but the 95-99 4g63 engines are a 7 bolt and the 89-94 are 6 bolt engines. This refers to how many bolts conect the flywheel. The most popular thing to do is to swap out the 7bolt for a rebuilt 6bolt, this is fairly cheap and relativly easy to do, if you are any good with motors. If your car has crank walk your clutch will seem to stick when making left turns, when your crank angle sensor reads this, it shuts down the motor and wont let it start up again then new motor is needed.

The Eclipse GSX and the Lancer Evo both Use 4g63 motors. Yes they use the same motor in theory. The EVO motor is built with stronger internals (rods and pistons) and a more aggresive head (cams, and higher rate valve springs and the list goes on) and the turbo is also bigger on the evo, but as you can see here, that 4g63 motor in your eclipse has lots of potential to be the same monster as the EVO!

BUT... if you plan on buying the car just 2 drive around stock and are looking for a reliable used car, i would advise against it. The all wheel drive trannys are not known for there longevity and are very expensive 2 replace. Turbo will start spewing oil (blown seals) anywhere from 90k to 120k and will need to be rebuilt! NOT CHEAP, not to mention at this time, the whole motor will probably need a major restoration (blown piston seals etc).

Remember a $5000 eclipse gsx needs about another $5000 to run like new. Check out RoadRaceEngineering's website. Those guys are the master tuners of EVO's and eclipe turbos

They are awd turbos so they are awesome... they break all the time and are expensive to fix. Good for a project car, bad for a daily driver.

In the end, I would suggest you look into an older 1g GSX or Talon TSI, you can find one for very cheap 2-3k!!!

Good luck with your purchase, do what makes you happy.
