Fiery crash causes big backup on I-5 South

11/27/2001

Reported by Jim Forman, KING 5 News

SEATTLE - On Tuesday afternoon an Acura ended up wedged under a big rig, burned to a crisp. Three people just made it out of the fiery mess of twisted metal.

The crash and fire crippled the evening commute.

Jamir Singh Barar was heading to San Francisco to pick up a load of fish when he saw trouble coming at him in his rearview mirror.

“These guys were driving crazy really fast on the highway,” he says.

Barar says the Acura lost control and plowed under his truck. As the flames spread fast he and his buddy raced to get everyone out.

“We say get out of the car, get out of the car,” says Barar.

They did. The first troopers on the scene thought someone must have been killed, but no one was injured.

“We have witnesses that say a couple cars were racing and then maybe hit the jersey barrier, bounced off, ran underneath the truck. When they hit the truck, the brakes on the truck malfunctioned. That's why you see such a large scene, the truck actually dragged the car from there to here,” said Monica Hunter of the Washington State Patrol.

The tremendous back-up had ripple effects across the region, with many Sonics fans missing the tip-off of Tuesday night’s game.

The accident is under investigation.

It was a black INTEGRA GS-R...I saw the pictures of the rear wheel whatever was left of the accident..it was totally under the rear of a semi container and I guess it was dragged a few hundred feet..

I think those 3 people in the car will get charged with something...at least they escaped with their lives...and at the same time, they endangered everyone elses lives too.

Now I know why insurance for a 2 door Acura GS-R is so expensive for those under 25....

Actually, they were all under 18. The driver didn't get shit. He was "sent home"...he "escaped" it all I guess.

But I think the city will file for charges..reckless driving/endangerment and possible delay of game, sonics game.

I don't know why you would race especially with 3 passengers in the car..in an INTEGRA.

These kids deserve to die. No consideration for the safety of other innocent drivers sharing the road during rush hour.

I'd like to know HOW they were racing on I-5 during rush hour. Rush hour 'round here starts at like 2 o'clock!!!! Just don't understand. Glad they're okay, but use some common sence, especially with the weather we're having lately!!!! Geez. They obviously acted like under 18 drivers. Probably showing off for a girl!!!

Everyone who wants to race needs to be more careful. Just think of other people on the road. Don't endanger their lives and their families so don't race when there is traffic!!

Some of the younger Seattle drivers are crazy...I know, cause I grew up there. If those kids aren't cruisin' Lake Washington Blvd, they are racing on NE 148th Ave (yeah, I was an Eastsider).

But the import scene is very good. I've seen some insanely modded cars out there, mostly cause of the rich economy (microsoft). Ahhh...to be home again...

They need to learn how to drive and when to race....good decision making is the problem....not street racing.

He prob. didn't mean it like you guys are taking it, he just meant use some sense when racing ie good road, no one out, by your self,

Really take it to the interstate when no one is out.

yeah on the interstate late at night, good weather (not after it just rained, snowed, ect...) when not many people are out. if you're going to do it, just make sure noone is going to get in your way

this is going to sound crazy but why don't you just race in sanctioned events? go join the scca and do some autox, goto dragstrips at raceways.. public roads are not where you should be finding out your limits..
my insurance is high enough as it is.. i don't need irresponsible children jacking it up further for me..
