BMW didn't change from 40 to 45 because you bent 3 wheels. They changed it for various reasons, mostly because of complaints of the harsh ride of the RFT tires. The new tires on the F model 3 series is a new generation of RFT's, and supposed to be so much better, you won't even realize that you're driving a car with RFT's.

My 18" Wheels and 225/40/18 tires on my GTI didn't have any superpowers that I never had a problem with them. Makes me wonder why I've had 3 of the 4 wheels on my Mini with RFT tires and 205/45/17 rubber replaced so many times.

Apples and Oranges, son.

Back on topic.
No it is not, boy. My car never had 18" RFT; my 2 sets of 225/40/18 were non RFT. And I remind you that at one instance, at the wheel shop, I was there talking with a GLI owner. *Must be a mere coincidence*.

It was a reply to OP who asked my opinion. If you don't agree, I don't care and mind your own business.

Get on a broken and rutted freeway like the 405 here in L.A. and it's a different story. More than once this weekend I felt like I was behind the wheel of a Nissan GT-R. At highway speeds, the GTI feels considerably less compliant. Those 40-series tires suddenly feel more like they look as every crack comes through to the interior.

So you're comparing your 40 series rubber on your non run-flat tires with BMW's choice of putting 45 series rubber on their newer cars that are run-flat tires. And the OP is contemplating getting a VW. But how big or small, how light or how heavy, how long or short the wheelbase, how tight or soft the suspension, none of that matters to how the car is going to ride? Do you really think that 40 series rubber rides the same on any car regardless of size? Generalizing will get you nowhere.

I'm done with this. Don't bother commenting because I won't reply, and I'm sure no one else cares to hear what you have to say either.

To the OP, don't be swayed by the tires that the car has. Most people don't buy a car because of the tires or wheels they have. And even if it would be an issue, there's always a simple solution. I'm sure you have experience with low profile tires and know what to expect. The GTI/GLI are both great cars, but if you needed a car NOW, I would say get the GTI. If you could wait for the '13, get the GLI. I personally like the GTI better regardless, mostly because of the hatch design and the fact that the interior quality is that much nicer in the GTI. VW skimped a little too much in the interior of the Jetta, IMO. I'm not sure if they improved on it with the GLI though.

Whatever you choose, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Good luck!

Is this thread about tires or about OP getting a new car?

I've been running both 235/40/18 and 245/40/18 tires for over 3 years now on the same set of wheels and have never had a problem.

I think what we can all take away from this is that Saintor can't drive for shit. He probably thinks you're supposed to aim for potholes.

I've ran 215/35/19s? on my ex's Prelude back in the day for years. That car was slammed with an OEM kit, no problems from me. Lived through SF and SJ potholes.

I'm thinking about switching it out. How much do you think I can get for this vehicle if I trade it in?
Does it have the Premium Package?

As a dealer, I would guesstimate low to mid 20's for it. I don't think I would pay more than $25k for it as a trade-in. For what your asking price is, after all incentives that Hyundai is pouring on a new 2012 model, it's very close to what you're asking. It wouldn't make any sense to me, logically speaking.

Hope that helps!

Thanks! Yes, I do have the Premium Package. My Sonata is the most expensive you can make it from the factory. I'm really hoping for $26K-$27K, but that might be overly optimistic. If I can't get that much, I'm left to negotiate the OTD price of a 2013 GLI.

Again, who knows someone who can swing a good deal?

Yes he should. The article I linked supports my point extremely well and it is about a GTI. My car rides very good on the winter wheels 225/45/17 but were terrible with 225/40/18, 2 different sets of them. Tires were the clearly issue, specially the size. My repair costs associated to these low profile tires is up to to 2000$ (3 wheels fix @ 88$, 1 tire @ 250$, 856$ of front struts changed prematurely, not taking of many lost hours taking care of the problems).

But hey if you want to take the risk, it is your money. Be prepared for an unpleasant experience.

Trolling *again* ?

BTW, 245/45/20 has a much higher tire height than 225/45 so you are not even talking the same thing.

I'm not the one who the conversation from a hyundai to tires on a bimmer.

And Im still running larger rims which can be prone to just as much damage as even with more sidewall...but its cool, because you know, when I see a pothole I avoid it...if I hit a bad patch of pavement, I slow down.

Its called driving...learn it.

Eddie. If that's your attitude, and how you choose to speak to our members, it's disappointing. Regardless of how you personally feel about someone, to speak out in such a manner as a representative of the site, makes us all look poorly.

I think I said this three times in this single thread alone.

JUST IGNORE HIM.

He won't listen.

He will just pew pew whatever he wants to say and believe whatever he says are the correct answer.

Just don't reply to him.

Hate to see so many threads getting destroyed by a single member. This shit happens every now and then. It died down when we started to completely ignore those people.

What the...? This is twice now in the last couple of weeks Astro has jumped in out of nowhere to publicly criticize a mod over his reaction to one of our more notorious problem-posters. First it was V-TEC down in "Automotive News", now it's this. Makes me wonder if Astro actually keeps track of the behavior of certain habitual offenders, or simply reacts to the occasional whining complaint sent to him by one of these guys.

Honestly, Astro, airing your dirty laundry like this, when you should be handling these discussions away from the general board population, reflects more poorly on the board leadership than does one mod reacting to a habitually insulting troll.

JS + MS3, you are the 2nd harasser that I reported to Acurazine management and mods. You are the first to break your "rule", your post #62 in this thread as evidence. I suggest that you play *low profile*.

Astro, now you can see how it typically starts. I was exchanging correctly with the OP and then you can see the 'uncalled for' interference.

BTW, I copy here the text of the guy who just contacted me and suggested me to take the proper steps;

This is the troll just trying to act innocent like he suddenly has a halo on.

Brief search easily shows he no different than the madcats and others of the past.

Actually, I have been around since 2001 and recently, it is clear that THIS section of the forums is out of control (because of always a few harassers who can't control themselves) and deserves better. The PM I got are from fed up people who constated the same thing (see above). BTW, i you choose to attack an Acurazine "communauty architect" who has rightly some concerns about public image of the site, that is just another evidence of it. You should know better and certainly shouldn't add oil to fire.

The day you are an admin on this board is the day you get to tell me what I should and shouldn't do with respect to commenting on the adminstration of the board's activities. I didn't "attack" Astro; I commented on what I saw as an inappropriate use of his authority. As a member of the board (read "customer" here), I feel I am well within in my rights to do so. Should Astro feel otherwise, he is certainly capable of taking action, without your help or suggestion.

I'm sorry, but it seems we have a difference of opinon on what constitutes an "attack." The concept of an "attack" is not a function of "private" versus "public." It is a matter of content of the message. I could just as easily have "attacked" Astro via PM as I could on the public board. Since I did neither, the point is moot.

Nevertheless, to further belabor the point, I was certainly critical of his actions. However, at no point, did I make an attack on his person. Nor did I engage in superfluous ad hominems to feed my ego. Finally, I refrained from expletives, crass metaphores, and insults of his intelligence. All of those actions are ones I've seen exhibited by you (aimed at various posters, including me) in the last week alone.

Beam and Mote, Saintor. Give it some thought.

This is pretty damn pathetic. I think this is actually my first time being disappointed at AZine.

We need a dislike button system, so we can publicly sort out the trolls.

If someone is getting certain number of dislikes within certain period of time, those trolls need to be banned for certain amount of period.
