Probably because the previous owner didn't fix the oil leaks.
e38 740's are great cars. Aside from being a bloody mess.

My mom had two e38 740ils. Traded the first one in for the 2001, kept the 2001 until 2 years ago. At the 10 year mark the oil seals and gaskets start going to shit and the radiator and hoses went down the toilet. The dealer changed every fucking oil seal / gasket / cover on it to the tune of $15k in two years. I think the dealership she went to are a bunch of fucking crooks, but I wasn't there to supervise.

I learned this after the fact.. after paying $15k, it still leaked. They diagnosed it as the upper cover gasket, this after replacing the pan gasket, solenoid gaskets, valve cover gaskets, lower cover gasket, etc.. I was back home at the time of the new diagnosis, I had them put it up on a lift. I found out that they wanted another 3-4k to replace the upper cover gasket. I told them to go fuck themselves.

I gave her the title to my RX and told her to sell the 740 and recover some costs (she was tired of dealing with it). She sold it to her friend for $6k. It had some scruffs but the paint was cherry and had under 40k miles.

My RX is a 99 and aside from the tb sensor going haywire, hasn't had one non-maintenance issue. I did leave it sitting for some time and the tires dry rotted. I went back home and drove it thinking the fucking car was going to fall apart. She had been driving it in that condition for months acting like it was normal. The tread was actually separating from the tire.. new tires.. good as new.

I hear ya but I know the full history of the car and the owner for over 10 years.

The motor was replaced right before the extended warranty expired. It was done on purpose...

He had the transmission replaced, all the interior LEDs, all the plastics, suspension, brakes, etc..

He worked at the BMW dealer so he had some pull...

I had 10mm on all four wheels on my M5 and they were perfect.

When I got traded in the M5 I kept the spacers and I put the 10mm on the rear only of my 335 as the fronts were fine.

BTW, I went with Macht Schnell. They're high quality stuff and come with elongated lugs.

Cant tell from that angle but maybe a 12mm in front and a 10mm in rear.

Macht schnell are good ones, as mentioned they come with the wheel bolts.

Ttribe, I obviously missed this, but what caused you to trade in the M5? I still have my 335i and while I love it, I'm starting to get bored with it.

lol, I saw one that was a complete dumpster fire that my local BMW dealership was trying to sell cheap. It needed a clutch, brakes, tires, and had various leaks.

Due to the seriously low price, the gears started turning in my head, but my better judgement threw a wrench in there just in time to stop me.

Buying an e60 M5 or any euro sports car with an exotic engine is like fucking a hooker without a jimmy, a game of chance. Don't let your penis do the thinking gents.

Yup. That's why I'm looking to buy the extended Warranty this year before the original expires.

I think that's the equivalent of sticking to a high priced, but probably clean hooker.

oh ok thanks. I only read the first page back when he first started the thread and just recently quickly skimmed the rest. I was only looking at his post. ive always been interested in 7 series but that bmw/german cars in general maintenance has scared me off. I wanted to see how his ownership has been so far.

I don't think Jesal kept the E38 long enough to refill the windshield washer fluid

old thread

Car's still running good (although between city valet guys they've managed to curb every wheel but one). Did a transmission service and replaced sparkplugs about a month ago.

Currently looking to upgrade to a 2012+ F02 750li CPO'd car.

Read up on the N63 Customer Care plan, 750's are spending 60+ hours on the shop needing new timing chains, turbos, etc

Wow...this why I'm leaning more towards an LS, but those 7's look so good.

Modern LS's have trouble over 100K, the S-Class is usually the best option as always!

IMO, I'd pick up a 535i and get it tuned. Much more reliable than the Turbo V8s BMW put out b/w 2008-2013

I'll buy a CPO car, so not really worried

5 series I've thought about, but not really big enough in the rear for me
