2007 Honda Pilot or 2005 MDX

For some reason I want you guys to validate my thoughts - so here it goes. Time has come to trade in the CL-S - I have been looking at the 2007 Pilot EX-L (leather, heated seats, all the good stuff)

and the other vehicle is a 2005 MDX with 14k miles:

Now both are coming out to roughly the same price, however the Acura is certified with a 100k mile warranty (which is a big plus)

What do you guys think? Questions, concerns, comments?

ps - I've gone to three dealers and the most I am getting offered on my CL-s w/ 106,000 miles is $7000 - which is OK considering the need for brakes, rotors, inspection, suspension.

i'm not sure, but don't these have the tranny problems that you didn't like with your CL?

^^ yes, my dad has a 2002 MDX and he's gone through 2 transmissions, other than that the car has been solid. My vote's for the MDX, the car is so much better.

The tranny's for the 04-06 MDX's have been fixed. The first batch had poor transmissions but they have been repaired. The MDX is a solid vehicle, but the fact that the Pilot is brand new is a big plus for me, who knows what that MDX has been through, that's always the gamble with buying a used car.

My vote is for the Pilot, they're very very similar vehicles when it all boils down to it.

The 2005 MDX's have the same tranny issues as the 01-03 CL/TL?

EDIT - I guess the post above answers my question...sorry I missed it at first

The 05 MDX trannies are better if they are evenly priced check out insurance on both and then make your decision since they are pretty much the same car.

I bought a 2006 MDX new, nice truck but after 6 months I decided t wasn't as family friendly and wasn't worth the extra money versus the cost of the 2007 Pilot.
I drove the Pilot which also had the DVD and not only is it less expensive, it has seating for 8, more storage and seems a tad bit bigger.
I like the interior layout better as well, the MDX interior is a bit dated by comparison.
I got the 2007 Pilot EX-L with DVD for 31,500 at 3.9% for 5 years and love the truck.

Insurance on the 07 Pilot is $40 LESS per 6 months then I am paying now on my 01 CL-s. A 05 MDX would be roughly the same as I am paying now...I asked why and the guy told me the Pilot has won some safety awards and besides that - he is just going by what the computer tells him.

The more I think about it, I am leaning towards the 07 Pilot or a very slightly used 06. It all depends on the price. Best Price I have received so far is from a wholesaler... 2007 Pilot EX-L (No navi or dvd entertainment system) for $29k....Trading in the CL, and financing at 4.9% brings my payments to ~475/5 yrs.

Plus they are willing to pay off the $990 I owe still on the CL-s

Now a bad deal ...just wish I had faith the CL would last me another year...but I really fear the tranny going for the fourth time.

We have a 2005 Pilot. The car is solid, does well in the bad weather.
Also the EX-L is very nice. What is making you go from a CL to a Pilot?

Another thing....I know for a fact the Pilot takes regular gas. I believe the MDX states the need for premium. That should be a big factor with gas prices.

Before you purchase one of those two, do yourself a favor and test drive a CX-9 AWD GT. My wife and I did, and we ended up purchasing one. I cannot begin to tell you how nice they are. Drive one, and see what you think. Here is a picture of ours.

Meh - I always thought 'Slades and X5'ers were for snobby soccer mom's more so than MDX.

Anyhoo - I'd roll with the new Pilot over the used MDX. You never know how hard the previous owner drove the MDX.

Well even though the MDX is used and if the previous owner did beat on it the warranty would cover any failure up to a 100k miles.

I have, as a matter of fact, I drove it, along with an MDX, Pilot, Sante Fe, Outlook, and looked at but did not drive a BMW X3, RAV 4, and a LR2. Out of all of the vehicles that I drove, the CX-9 was hands down the best. The MDX was damn nice, but there was a significant difference in price between it and the CX-9.

Here is the lastest comparison done by motortrend between the 2007 Arcadia, the 2007 MDX and the 2007 CX-9 AWD GT. You will be suprised by the winner. After driving them, I was not suprised. The CX-9 is not a dog.

i've test driven the cx-7, and i was impressed by it. (i was impressed by the cx-7 too.)

i wouldn't compare the cx-7 to the new mdx, but i would favor the cx-7 to the pilot.

haven't driven the veracruz, but i intend to soon.

+1 for at least checking out a CX-9 or Veracruz before making your decesion. I haven't driven either, but as far as looks and interior go, Veracruz FTW IMO.

Do you mean CX-9?

CX-7 isn't really a competitor with any of these.

I'd buy '07 Pilot. My wife has '04 Pilot, never a problem, very solid SUV and tons of space. MDX just doesn't have enough to justify price difference with the Pilot, especially comparing to EX-L.

I'd go with the MDX considering I drive one back to back with my TSX. I've driven a friend's pilot, but it wasn't a 07. I can't really say much about the 07's because I have no update on what they've replaced/changed, but I liked my 04 MDX over my friend's 05 Pilot.
