2004 TL vs 2003 TL type S?
I have seen it before, but i can't find it now. I have a 2003 TLS and my friend has a 2004 TL. Both are stock automatics.
What are my chances?
Which car is faster?
Should i uses shift mode or leave it on drive? THANKS GUYS

It's more of a figure of speech than a true quote, though the mags have said it is better (albeit more torque steer).
In the 'ideal' circumstance, the '04 has more HP, more TQ and makes better use of its power at the lower end of the RPM band. That means a tick or two quicker car in a stop light race. With 'equal' drivers, the '04 should win. However, cars can vary and driver's certainly vary, so you have a driver's race. Using s/s or gate shifting, etc. takes practice to get it down. If you aren't used to all that, just turn off your VSA and stomp and go (hoping he is screwing around with s/s or the gate and screws up).

I did have a very old post with me running a 6mt from my local dealership. The car hung around low but from a roll I ate it up pretty quick. My car is much quicker from a roll than a stop where I have bad traction problems (and I'm sure the driver problems don't help either).

I have an 02 Type S and I was lucky enough to get an '04 TL last week as a loaner. It had 4K miles on it and was also automatic. As much as I love my car, I'd have to say the '04 would beat the Type S. In ss mode, was more responsive than in my car and the engine certainly had more torque. However, as r10apple said, it's a driver's race...when I first got my car, I lost a couple easy ones because I didn't know the best times to shift and didn't realize what my car was capable of, so if this guy who wants to race you has the same experience as I did in the beginning, you'll take him. Oh yea, probably obvious, but make sure you turn off the VSA...
Good luck, have fun and don't get caught!

I raced an '04 automatic heads up in the quarter mile (at the track) and beat it by 2 tenths of a second. I have a comptech ice box, but that's it. Honestly I was surprised that he didn't rape me because I had heard they were much faster.

I'll bet on the TL-S, so long as the tranny's working good. IIRC, the topend on both the TL-S and 04 TL are very similar @ 150mph-ish.

I've tried feathering it but then lose out on the top end. I don't mash it entirely, but ease in still very hard...
With good tires on a fairly cool night and low humidity, the car easily runs 14.3's over and over and is likely capable of 14.1 or so driven right. It's got plenty of gusto for sure...
And I agree the '04 is better down low for sure. From a stop it should have a jump if driven right...But, good kill bradb1us!

Maybe it's just me but In my older Motor Trend mags they say the Type S does the 1/4 in 14.7 and my recent ones say the 04 does the 1/4 in 14.8. But that's just my 2 cents.

03 TL-S 1/4 mile time 14..8
04 TL manual 14.2 to 14.4 or so
auto should be around 14.5 or 14.6 not sure...
but i give my edge on the 04 TL if driven well. bad driver its a drivers race.

I have both an 04 and an 02 TL-S. The TL-S is actually stronger down low while the 04 is a bit more torquey up top. I just got a new digi cam and I'm gonna race them with my brother driving one of the TLs and I'll post it on this site if I could get someone to host it for me. This will give you guys a definitive answer and end all these speculations. It will be close, but I think my TL-S w/ AEM CAI is a bit faster.

I think with ur intake it could be as fast or a bit faster than a auto. but manual maybe. but i give the edge on the 04 manual TL
He's racing stock vs stock. Intake would make a difference puting it to a drivers race..
I raced one 4 months ago and it was a drivers race. I tell you they are quick! I was dead even with him with my intake and lighter wheels up until 90mph where he shut it down cause of traffic. He must of been an auto.. or a manual that couldnt drive

Stock to stock, on average, the 04 AT is probably slightly faster (1 tenth or so in 1/4mi). However, they would be so close that the driver and how good the run is would be the determining factor in my opinion. Plus, differences within the model year could also affect the results (i.e. a fast 04 vs. a slower 04), as could tires, etc.

I raced my friend when he got a loaner 04 TL and I took him off the line and pulled away from him and I only had a CAI and I had my 19's on. We both have Type S and I never pulled on him like that before.

Wow.... 14.5 to 14.6 for an automatic 04 TL..... how did you calculate that??
I dare you to find any magazine that got those numbers for an automatic. Perhaps, somebody's g-tech ??
The 04 is every bit nose heavy as a TL-S or CL-S and the Maximum torque is acheived much heigher..... UNLIKE Tl-S or CL-S which maximum torque is at 3500 rmps to 5500 rpms... I understand that new 04 has 10 more hp and 8lb/ft more, but I also know that it weighs a bit more. 10 Horses is nothing to make a big difference in performance... c'mon guys...
both have the weak 4th gear, so in the end it should be about even.
I love my CLS but, comparing my CLS to an 04 TL, is like saying do I like green or red apples?? they are both apples.
