2002 BMW M Coupe Opinions?

I bought a 540i back in January and love driving it everyday. Its just that I had a CLS before and miss having a coupe. I'm only 22 and don't need a big 4 door sedan. I didn't think it would make much of a difference driving a big car, but its just simply too big. I don't need to be driving a huge sedan with a V8 under the hood at this time in my life...flame on...

I've been looking at 2001-2002 M coupes...what do you guys think of them?

Oh may I add, there's even room for my dog in the back! ok ok

Discuss.

Very fun car but not easy on the eyes. Why not the M roadster instead? Much better to look at.

Forget your dog, just walk him.

I love the M Coupes. And they are go karts if you get into autoX or road coursing.

Damn..you guys really think its THAT ugly? I didn't like the shape of these when they first came out...it might be the bmw convert in my speaking, but lately bmw styling has grown on me, and especially this one in particular. Plus how could you go wrong with the S54 engine in it???

I have considered the s2k, but its just too slow and the mods (besides FI) just aren't there.

Trust me, I would love to get another Honda, but the performance and "wow" factor isn't available.

Not saying you can't handle the power at your age, but why not start out small. Z4 3.0 would be perfect for you, and you should be able to find one reasonably priced.

at this age if he earned his drivers license he would be driving for 6 years. I would say that would be enough.

Earned my drivers' license at age 15. Trust me I started out small for sure:

1996 Honda Accord EX 4 cyl
2000 Honda Accord LX 4 cyl
1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cyl
2001 Acura CL Type S 6 cyl
1999 540i 8 cyl

I think I've climbed my way up amicably. But definitely looking for "moar powers"...hah

I take road trips often, and in the realm of impracticality, this is a little practical only because of the cargo area in the back. I have to take my dog with me just about every trip so my husky can chill back there and sleep.

Otherwise trust me, looking at the prices of the roadsters compared to the m coupes, I would have one in my driveway right now. The roadsters are selling a lot cheaper, and are a lot more common.

M coupes on the other hand are rare. I like rare.

I'd buy it. The M Coupe has always been a favorite of mine.

If it turns out not being a good fit for you, sell it. Rare models like those can't be hard to sell.

fantastic fit if youre:

1. bmw fan
2. need cargo, but want a sporty 2 seater
3. looking for power

my friend has the m coupe. certainly a head turner. im a big fan. my only question is: does it come with a sunroof? that would be a deal killer for me.

If our judgment is only as the M coupe's looks and you like the looks, then ignore our judgment.

FWIW, I think the M coupe is unique and attractive enough to buy.
However, I also like the looks of the Volvo P1800 (both coupe and wagon), Jensen Interceptor III, Saab 99 coupe and Volvo C30, so maybe I'm not the best judge of car aesthetics.

The '01-'02 M coupes are very rare, they come with the E46 M3's engine in it, and the '98-'00 coupes come with the E36 M3's engine in them.

Anytime a '01-'02 is for sale apparently a dealer called Enthusiast Auto always grabs them up....

So when I do start my hunt for one, I'm going to have to go balls to the wall when I do sight one and just go ahead and lay down a deposit before they do. Really sucks when the market is so tight and you're competing with a dealers with millions of dollars and lots of resources.

But yes, anytime I do decide to sell, it will be a very quick, and easy sale.

Apparently a lot of them do come with sunroofs, but they only tilt, they don't open. A "sunroof delete" was an option I'm pretty sure, but VERY FEW have this option. As in, you will probably never find them without a sunroof.

I've always been a huge fan of those. I've never been lucky enough to drive one, but IIRC at the time they were the best handling BMWs made. I personally love the styling on them. Very unique in a weirdly beautiful kind of way. Plus it's a hatch so you have utility. I say go for it and post pix as soon as you pick one up. Damn jealous that you're 22 and have the ability to own that car. Oh well, I guess I can close my eyes and imagine my Accord is an M coupe. Sigh.

I'm going to have to brush up on my manual drive skills. Haven't driven manual since I learned how to drive when I was 15. So little to no experience really. But I'll get there.

I agree about the styling. Its so unique, at first look, it may look awkward, but it grows on you, and quickly at that. The back end looks so mean with some nice wide tires.

Haha, no need to be jealous, it'll be a small gift to myself after graduation. But the way these things sell, I have to start looking during the next few months.

December can't come fast enough.

Prices are about the same with the Z4 being a few thousand more, which I could deal with. Just depends if you like the styling and the extra creature comforts of the Z4 M coupe.

I definitely considering both. But I'm not going to lie, I like the Z3 styling more.

The M Coupe is the quintessential "bread box" that people love to hate. Saw them when they rolled out in Germany, and they are a great drive.

Do it and the only regret is keeping it in shape, which could be a love too......

If it were me I would get it. Just keep in mind that an 8 year old BMW is not going to be as reliable as you may like.

Wow. Doing those things in that video on public roads FTMFL. :thumbsdow

Though we do now know that the M Coupe can handle pretty well.
