2001 CL Type-S for $19K

My buddy just called me becuase he knows I'm looking for an 02 TL-S and he made me an offer:

2001 CL (yes, a CL) Type-S
57,000 miles (Oil Jet kit installed) Tranny Cooler in his closet, will include w/ car.
03 TL Type-S rims
Tein SuperStreet CoilOvers (says they cost $1,000)
Comptec Headers (says they are $1600)
Comptec Icebox (says it was $300)
Drilled and slotted rottors (front and rear) with Axis pads
SportShift
needs tires

all for the low low price of $19,000

this really kills me b/c i really want a 4-Door. I'm a 20 y/o looking ahead with practicality....but they again, something is nagging me saying....I MUST GO FAST, TURN FAST AND STOP FAST!!

but look what he's done to it. I really didn't break it all down, but I'm just guessing it's a deal by what he has put into it.

A modded car is worth what you want to pay for it. For some it's a deterrant, and will lower the value. For others, it will really raise the price. People think different things are worth the cash.

Kind of like trying to explain to the wife why I would pay $2200 for a pool cue. For others, it's almost worthless.

He disliked the CL-S rims that much that he got TL-S rims? If I'm not mistaken, the '01 CL-S rims look the same as the TL-S rims and are only wider. Is there something I'm missing here?

I think he said that the "spokes are wider"? But I'm not sure...I'll prolly take it out for a spin this weekend, but my heart is with the practicality of 4 Doors.

My father says the exact EXACT same thing. Now that I'm out of the ricey-teenage years, I'm beginning to think the same.

CL-S rims "stick out" quite a bit, so if you scrape a curb, you'll scrape the rims up pretty bad. TL-S rims are more flat looking so they don't scrape curbs as easily.

CL-S rims have the advantage that they're 17x7s while the TL-S rims are only 17x6.5 .. so the CL-S rims can more easily put wider rubber on their rims. With the TL-S rims, you're already pushing it with the 215s.

2nd generation TL(s)/CL(s) have alot of problems, before you buy it. Make sure you know how that transmission is , because the car is out of warrenty at 57,000 miles. For $19,000, I rather buy something else that's My opinion. Good luck.

I bet I couldn't get $19k for my '01 CLS with all of MY mods. BTW, the headers are only $1200 new. You should only pay 1/3 for used mods.

The CLS is known to have severe transmission problems. You know that by now just looking at the forums. Its a design flaw and the long-term reliability isn't there for the tranny. You are covered until 100k miles but afterwards, you are SOL if the tranny breaks. For $20k, you could buy an SRT-4 and stop, go, turn much much faster than a CLS. If the CLS was a manual, I would say go for it but I think its a questionable decision to buy from your friend. I would never buy a car from a friend...bad things can happen.

The CLS tranny problem is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. The people on the board are enthusiasts and, like me, are hard on their cars. Those with problems usually make the most noise. I have 75k on my S/C'd '01 CLS and haven't had a tranny problem (yet). Don't buy from a friend. Good advise!

Sure an SRT-4 is faster, but they still look cheap inside and out(although improved). A
CL-S is a much nicer car.

Not disagreeing with you there but the original poster said he wanted to go fast, turn fast, and stop fast. If those are the main criteria, the SRT-4 is a better fit

If he said he wanted to go, turn, and stop fast with style, then the CLS may fit better
