1994 Legend GS 108,000 miles....

What am I looking at as far as longevity and reliability? How much longer can it go. No mods. Car looks amazing for its age. Haven't driven it yet, just seen pics. Price is negotiable from $7k. What do you think? I always wanted one of these. Thinking of putting my Jetta up for sale for it.

it's an awesome looking car, but keep in mind, it's still a 12 year old car. longevity and reliability depend greatly on how the previous owner(s) treated it.

He seems to have alot of records. I will have to see what is there before I make a decision. Considering it was only driven less than 10k miles a year, it should be in pretty good shape mechanically.

if the car is as he says only new-york-drive since this year (i think) then for the price I think it's good buy.

legends are very reliable (besides in infamous blown head gasket), but just keep in mind they are old cars and develop small problems.

I just went over 120k in my 91' so mine has low milage for it's age too, but it does seem like something small happens every so often. It was time for new brakes, then a month later my radiator cracked, then yesterday it developed a small transmission coolant leak, but my mechanic fixed for free. I'm probably going to keep it as long as i possibly can. I mean i've heard of legends lasting easily to 200k, and some even as far as 300k. and the GS is the top of the line, and i'm sure a lot more luxurious even for 12 years old than your jetta. and my 98' vw bug probably had more problems than my legend did

i'd make sure the tb/wp was replaced at 90k, and if you test drive, look for signs of a BHG. keep up with proper maintence scheudle, and it should be fine. remember a coolant flush is a lot cheaper than replacing a head gasket.

Thanks for the info. My Jetta was an interim vehicle. I got it for 3 grand and it has not even 60k on the clock, which is low for a '97, plus it had leather so it didnt feel like a step down from my 1st gen CL too much. I always see these Legends for sale with 150k plus on the clock and if anybody had a clean GS, they were asking for $9k or better.

I knowI can get 3500-4000 for my Jetta in its condition and mileage, but I wasn't too sure about Legend reliability.

Ken is the Legend guru, so maybe he'll chime in on this, but my understanding is that other than the BHG and the rear transmission mount, they're solid cars if they've been maintained properly.

on i'm with you...legend's are pimp tight when modded, especially with 18's and a greddy sp2 exhaust . but i'll admire it from the sidelines. i couldn't put money on it...unless i just had that kind of money laying around and absolutely nothing else to use it on.

I'd get it if it were maintained properly.

Is a 6 speed manual or auto?

some ppl are mentioning the blown head gasket, but i have to warn you that it is a VERY common problem in this generation legend. in fact, i just got rid of my 93 after i had every symptom of bhg (after the last 2 years in heavy la traffic commutes). the car only had 120K on it but i think that since the head gasket is made out of mostly plastic it is one of the only pieces on the car that will not stand the test of time, hence, bhg for all but the most meticulously maintained legends. there are other legends that are the same age as mine was with double the miles so imo, which could be wrong, it's more how old the part is.

if you know you have one you are looking at at least 2k in repairs, not to mention you should probably get the timing belt and water pump replaced at around 120k which is close to another 1k. you gotta check out this website if you are seriously considering buying one.

I say do it, it's as common as our tranny issues but not a guarantee it will happen. If it does go throw a type S motor in there

Highest milage legend i've heard of. But it did have to replace the Headgasket and rebuild the tranny. Even throuh all that, i'd say they got their money's worth outta that car.
