18 wheeler crushes young driver
For some reason, I found this news story to be particularly tragic. The victim sounded like a great person.

DALLAS - A deadly and bizarre multiple-vehicle accident Wednesday in downtown Dallas has two families grieving.
Twenty-year-old Ashley Parra was driving on Continental Avenue when she was killed after an 18-wheeler fell onto her car as it dove off the Woodall Rogers Freeway ramp that leads to Interstate 35. The driver of the truck, David Simonellis of Bedford, was thrown from the vehicle and also died.
Authorities said it appeared the truck's load, a large amount of metal pipe stems, may have shifted and led to the deadly accident.
A waitress at Hooters, Parra was only a half mile from her work when the truck drove off the ramp.
"She was a just a good kid," said Susan Castro, Ashley's grandmother who raised the University of North Texas student since she was 9-years-old. "If she said she was going to be somewhere, that's where she was going to be."
Castro said Parra's reiable nature was the reason she began to grow concerned when she heard Parra had not shown up to work.
"I can't believe it," she said. "It's so hard to believe. I just saw her yesterday."
Castro said Parra drove the same route to work everyday.
Parra was in her first semester at UNT and was studying to become a teacher. Before that, her grandmother said she spent two years studying law at Southern Methodist University.
Castro said Parro loved horses, was on the school's equestrian team and had a passion for traveling.
She had also promised to take her grandmother exploring across the country.
"She had good grades," Castro said. "[She] had a lot of potential, and she was going to grow up and be somebody someday and now she's gone."
Continental Avenue remained closed late Wednesday night. Authorities said it will stay closed until all of the debris is removed and crews determine the road is safe.

Looked like a cute girl that had a lot ahead of her. I had a friend die the same way when a trucks load shifted and crushed his 4-Runner.

My son's Mom was 27 when she was killed in a similar accident about 4 years ago just outside of Little Rock...the guy was speeding and lost his load of plywood... I really think trucks should be on their own highway... forgive me... I am jaded...
Praying for both families... hard times ahead...

last fall, a truck was going too fast around a turn on a highway ramp and dropped it's load on the road below killing the person it fell on. later i found out that i knew them from working at at&t. he never knew what hit him, but such a senseless death that could have been prevented by a dumb trucker

Sad to say, but almost anyone here at AZ prob knows someone who has been killed in a truck-related accident... that was NOT their fault....

Not only are they dangerous on their own, as a motorcyclist (and a driver with a dented fender), those gigantic blown out truck tires are a serious hazard. And they litter the roadways.
+1 for own highways for 18 wheelers.

My father lost a classmate or former business partner (don't recall which) a couple years ago when a truck carrying fencing on an overpass lost its load onto the highway below.
Whenever on the highway I never stay next to trucks, I wait until whoever in front of me is far ahead of the truck, and then floor it past them.

I work for a transportation company and the industry isn't like it was 10-20+ years ago. Gas prices have risen so much and that's put a lot of private truckers out of business. There isn't any pride in being a truck driver anymore like in the older days. There's satellite tracking and everything being delivered is time sensitive since company's cannot keep production stock in house anymore due to high costs. Can't tell you have many drivers we get that can't even say "Hi" as a response because they don't know any English... that can't help the situation any.

It's very tragic. It sounds as if she was truly a good person. I also feel sorry for the truck driver IF it was something beyond his control that caused the accident. At this point it seems as if no one really knows the exact reason for him losing control. It could have been a mechanical failure, tire blowout, or even the equipment used to hold the load could have failed, causing the load to shift.
I'm not a trucker, but my farms rely heavily on them and their equipment for day to day operations. I have a number of Peterbilts, but they are limited to feed and grain deliveries only. I'm not sure if separate roadways are the answer, as the logistics and infrastructure to allow truckers to deliver their loads at precise destinations would probably need be altered drastically and the costs astronomical. Throughout the years, however, I've noticed that truck driving schools are pumping anyone out the doors who has a pulse and can understand the basics of air brakes. Perhaps increased driver education, additional training, and enforcement of safe driving and equipment upkeep would minimize accidents like these.
I agree with another poster who commented on the difficulties of riding a motorcycle and dealing with trucks. During my bike trips it's happened more than a few times where some trucker pulling 45 000 pounds has ridden my ass down the highway because I wasn't traveling fast enough to suit him. That being said, I know plenty of good truckers who are some of most careful drivers I know.
