05 Tacoma TRD or Nismo Frontier
I can't decide between the two. I'm looking for a 4x2 with V6 that can handle occasional off-roading, no rock crawling just high speed desert runs. Both are 4.0L V6 with Bilstein dampers. I'll probably get the 06 year model since these two look like first year redesign models. Which would you choose and why?

Honestly, if you are driving on a beach or in any sand, I suggest getting a 4x4. The extra $2k would be worth it. My Sequioa gets stuck at the beach every time we take it and I kick myself for not getting the 4x4...Additionally, as a former pickup owner, please get a king cab or access cab as a single cab is absolutely the pits for any practical hauling of groceries, dry cleaning, etc--especially if you are carrying a passenger...
In the long run, if this is something you will own for a long time, Toyota has superior build quality and reliability above all else. If you are looking at 3 or 4 years only, get the extra HP and style and get the Nissan...

I disagree with your reliability statement, nissan frontiers are VERY reliable vehicles and always have been.

Nissan hasn't had a truck platform that Nismo worked on until recently. TRD has worked on the Tacoma for some time.

I'm not certain that the Frontier really needs to have any Nismo involvement. What the last Frontier (and Xterra and Quest) needed was an upgrade from the VG33DE to a new VQ.
(Man! I wish my 00 Quest had a VQ rather than it's lame@$$ VG33DE.
)
But in the quality game, it's hard to outdo Toyota.

Thanx for the input. I'm looking at the 4x2 due to the lighter weight and easier maintainence. Offroading in 4x2 in not that bad, just needs some patience, alot of practice and airing down on sand. The Nismo's got tire pressure monitor standard. Both trucks are extended cab and have rear lockers. The Fronty's got more power, but it's high up in the power band, like 5800, I think it's a redone 3.5L VQ motor. I don't know if Nismo tunes trucks or makes parts for them but I know Nismo is just a name change from Desert Runner. Bolt-on superchargers may come out soon for TRD, not sure about Nismo. At first glance, the Nismo is cheaper but after crunching some numbers, the TRD is a better bargain with more features like oil/tranny coolers and an AC outlet in the bed. But it's too early and Nissan may whip out some huge rebates later on.

Since Toyota has been shoving that "Motor Trend Truck of the Year" thing to everybodys face, I don't think they will come out with any big rebates or special financing anytime soon.

From a maintenance standpoint, my '99 4Runner 4x4 had 75k miles when I traded it in and NOTHING ever went wrong with it--EVER. I simply changed the oil w/ synthetic every 10k miles and the diff/gear lube stuff twice (at 30k and 60k) and that was all the maintenance I ever did. I had a '96 4x4 (king cab) and a '94 4x4 (regular cab) and both I did nothing ever but change the oil at 7500 miles and changes the diff/gear stuff maybe twice each and both had well over 100k miles on them with ZERO problems or maintenance issues ever.
I still say my ex-wife's old '99 Camry was better built and more solid than even my Acura. I even think the Sequioa I have now is equal too it, if not better...
