S4s are highly moddable
S4s are relatively reliable but not the most reliable

Other suggestions... Volvo V70 T5, Volvo V50 T5, BMW 3-series Wagon, Mazda 6 SportWagon

There is quite a bit of performance potential with the B5 S4. Like any other car, the performance potential revolves around how much you want to put into it. The nice part about the B5 S4 is the initial $$/HP potential.

For $600 you can get a chip which yields about 60 HP and around 110 lb/ft at the crank. That is quite a bit more torque (about 380 lb/ft at the crank) and comes in at 3k revs making it very usable. For a few more $$ (about $1000 if shopping right) you can do DPs and exhaust and get the top end to pull a little better. In all this should net you a car which should be capable of mid - low 13 second passes. For a simple of comparison of the basic bolt-ons and the relative results you can read the below article.

If even more is desired you can get a turbo upgarde but this will set you back, when fueling is added in, at least $5k. And that doesn't cover installation which could be upwards of $1500. The performance potential then is fairly open where some people are turning mid 11's at about 120 MPH.

Reliability is not too big of a concern as it seems hit or miss on the biggest possible source; the turbos. If they go south it is not a cheap repair which is why I would suggest getting a CPO Audi with warranty. However, if you plan on upgrading the turbos anyway, the warranty isn't as much of a concern.

I would look for a 2001.5 or 2002 MY. There were some minor updates made to fix some problems experienced in the earlier cars. That should easily fit in you price range. There also seem to be electronic gremlins which having the warranty helps with.

Just FYI, Last fall I went from this:
