01-03 CL/TL Transmission problem.
01-03 CL/TL Transmission problem.
Nowadays everytime i see a 2nd gen TL and CL, i always asked myself "how can that car still be running? how many transmission has he gone through already?"
I know plenty of people with 01-03 TL/CL and none of them had transmission lasted over 50k miles. My 1st one went out at 17k.
I know all of us had those cars at some point, how many of you NEVER had any transmission problems?
this poll is for Automatic Transmission Only!!!! no 6pd please.

so far so good for me at 170,000km (over 100,000 miles).
However, I'm not sure how accurate the poll is going to be. Most average TL drivers won't come to this forum if their TL is fine.

90+% of the ppl in car talk all had that car... So it is just as good as CL/TL section.
Average TL/CL drivers are clueless about tranny problems anyways.. they would just think it is an isolated problem..
Problems? It's never been to the stealership for tranny problems specifically *knock on wood* but there is the occasional shift flare and rough shifting.
I probably should do a 3x3 or whatever it is people are doing these days soon since the warranty is up. Is the warranty still 7 yr/100k miles?
IIRC there was a solid fix in the form of replacing the 3rd and 4th gear pressure switches too... seemed very easy. Thread was like over a dozen pages long though and in the 3G section, anyone with a 2G try that out?

I bought the car shortly after the trans was replaced in 07. From what I've read, this trans has a design flaw addressed. Seems like it, I'm on 70k on the new trans without any problems.

A used transmission can set you back 1k~1.5k, seems like most people have settled for the fact that if it comes to that they'll just spend that much and have the car good for another 50K miles or so and that is exactly what we have done so far with the 00 TL in our family. Besides the tranny issues, the car is solid just ask fsttyms1.
I bought my 00 TL back in the day from the original owner at 66k miles, drove till 96k and sold it to my brother as he needed a beater to commute to Hartford, CT every day. First transmission died at 125k, Acura partially covered it i.e. we had to pay labor and they provided parts.
My brother drove the car till it had 257k miles on it and we sold it to a family member, again
Here is how the car looked back in July 2009

Still ran like a champ with no mechanical issues beside the transmission failure fear.
Last time I heard the transmission did die around 275k but the new owner got a used one installed and currently the car has 302k and still running strong.

I didn't have my cl-p long enought for it to really have problems. I do notice the prices on the tl/cl compared to the accord, they are a little cheaper and i am sure the trans is part of that reason.
Hmm... this one is tricky. You probably won't get that many replies in Car Talk... you'd have better luck in the model forum. However, you're asking about CL & TL... so can't move it to just one forum.
If you're just looking for general info, Car Talk is fine. If you need more detailed info, you may want to repost in the model specific area. I'll leave this here for now unless you want me to move it to one or the other.
FYR, I had one tranny go out at ~35k miles. Second tranny was OK, but starting feeling weird around 75k miles... and that's when I decided to seel it and not continue to gamble since i was approaching the 100k warranty expiration...

I had a 2001 TL-P and we originally bought the car with 24,000 miles.
43,000 miles later, the transmission shifted from 5th - 1st and almost caused me a serious accident.
Sold the car with 75,000 and bought a 3G.

no not true there are alot of members that did not have an Acura Tl or CL. We only come to this forum because we had an Acura not a CL/TL
your will get way more responses if this was in the TL/CL section
^ Yeah, but that poll was skewed. It asked what Car Talk regular members were currently driving, however, most of the people who posted in that thread had never been in Car Talk (or came in so randomly that no one even knew their username). It's like they came out of the model forums just to vote here, then disappeared again.
In truth, a large majority of the Car Talk regulars no longer own Acuras...

Man oh man those trannies in those cars, I worked for Park Ave Acura back then and some of these cars crapped out on the delivery truck. I recall one guy had about 5 or 6 gearboxes and we suggested that instead of bolts we should just install the thing with Velcro. At one point in time some of the Techs were so good at swapping these things out they would actually have customers come in and WAIT while the car was being worked on. There were some fixes from Acura that at times worked at other times did not. Road testing some of these cars was an adventure and we had more than a few of these things decide to shift from fifth down to one at highway speeds. Goes without saying that this caused some pretty hairy driving manuevers (I had two of these adventures). At one point in time there was quite a bit of talk about a recall but it never seemed to pan out. It was a public relations nightmare for the dealers and honestly I think we could have held a contest to see who actually had the highest number of exchange boxes in their car.
Sadly even at times the replacement gearboxes died either in the shop or on the road test. Not a good deal for the customers and a disaster for the dealers.

yah i know i will get more responses from the TL/CL sections but i really don't want to get involved with those people for the Obvious reasons.
the poll is for people who have/had TL/CLs. all the OG people are still here.. not in TL/CL sections.
Bought my 2001 CL-S used 40k miles ago with aboout 75k miles. It had a TL-S tranny in it so I'm not sure how many its been through or how many miles is on the TL tranny. I still drive it everyday but it has a hard 2-3 shift and occasionally slips on 3-4.
I have an oddessy tranny sitting in the garage right now, waiting.

The poor quality, and lack of recall combined with the "sweeping it under the rug" mentality was a big reason why I left Acura.Piss poor quality.
Piss poor customer service. (not the dealer, mind you.....poor customer service from Honda/Acura).
Going on the 3rd tranny for a 2003 base with 176K miles...Sold the car, with bad faded black paint, to an Acura tech for $1300 and bought a TSX. I called everywhere for a used tranny and somebody in Cali want $3500 plus shipping for one with 96K miles.
I know this is somewhat a double post from my other thread, but should I just stay far, FAR away from a 2G TL? As I posted, a Dodge dealer near me has a 2003 TL-S with about 78k on the clock for sale, and it is one of my favorite Acuras ever made. Should I consider it if there is a specific trans-replacement date (if one can be provided) that is considered safe? Or if some kind of warranty can be bought from the dealer?
Bought my 2003 CL-S with 60k miles on it and the tranny went at around 79k miles. I sold it about 5k miles after the tranny was replaced and got myself a 2003 Accord 6mt.
You wouldn't happen to be black would you, not to be racist or anything, but because I am black dealerships treat me "differently." Sometimes I install a camera in my shirt or coat or in my white friends hat, and have him take my car in and for some reason, prices seem to change due to the color of your skin... Shits getting old for me.
My 2000 TL that I had a while back had ~210k on it, and the tranny would occasionally act funky, but didn't go bad (I think it was the original, too)
My 2001 CL-S had the transmission replaced in December of 07, then with 40k miles on that tranny, it failed a week ago.
