I've towed a ton of cars with much lesser vehicles than that F, and it definitely is annoying as all hell with no car on it. Bouncing everywhere, making noises, sometimes catching up to a foot of air lmao.


Sweet ass truck, best I ever towed with was a 04 Tahoe!

I see the driver doesnt take safety seriously. No helmet ???? Lol


Next time strap it down to a flat open sided/snowmobile trailer and drive around and see what kind of looks you get I did it with my RC Truck (albeit larger than normal/stretched Traxxas T-Max) but the looks on peoples faces were priceless.

The older was riding her bike earlier & hadn't taken the helmet off.

Anyone do any heavier trailer towing with a 1/2 ton?
Mentioned in this thread that we'd bought a 7x12 tandem cargo trailer for my wife's business. We were on a little team retreat last week & I got to talking with one of the guys there that has a car hauler that they outfitted to use for the business. He just sold a 24' & has ax 8x30x10 on order.
Definitely made me after he told me that dry, the trailer is around 3k lbs. I figure after outfitting & putting the inventory in, we'd be between 5500-6000 lbs; the 2.7 tow capacity is 7200 I think. Not 100% sure if it's too much trailer for the truck.

Mentioned it to the wife & she liked the idea. Thought we'd just sell the trailer we just bought, when (her words) she said "or we could make it a race/kart trailer. Paging juniorbean!!!

So, who's towed bigger trailers with a 1/2 ton? What should I be aware of before going down this path? Definitely know I'll need to add a brake controller, our current trailer has brakes, but is light enough to not be an issue yet.

6k lbs with a 7200lb tow rating is peanuts, you'll be fine. I towed 7k lbs with my Denali and it didn't even flinch. It will be obviously slower to start, stop, turn, etc but if you've ever towed anything you already know this. Be smart and safe, you'll be fine.

TBH, proper trailer loading is more important than overall weight. Oh and buy that brake controller, it makes a HUGE difference regardless of if you need it or not.

^^^^ as pointed out the trailer brake is key in my opinion. Also if you are worried about the larger trailer swaying in the wind at all on the highway get a new hitch with anti sway bars. I have them for my car hauler and in my opinion it made a huge difference. I wouldn't tow more than 30min without them. Just makes things much more stable.

What about a fifth wheel? Admittedly I don't know much about towing, but it's something I've considered when I get a tow rig and 4-6 person trailer. I've seen the bolt-in fifth wheel hitches so you're able to still use the entirety of the bed when not towing.

Eh, if you can properly load a trailer (most of the weight up front on the tongue) you don't get much sway. Also with something like a F150 that has a long wheelbase, you should be just fine. The anti-sway hitch is only going to make things better but is by no means a requirement.

Fifth wheel for what? Unless you are running something really heavy or a camper, it's not needed. Basically, if you need one, you'll know it.

Thanks guys. Never towed anything heavier/bigger than a cargo trailer or car dolly. May have to give this more thought.

Not overly concerned about sway & the F150 has sway control as well.
Doubt my wife would want to tow a 30' trailer though.

Rethinking the bigger trailer now. Towed our current 7x12 up to my dad's to look at making transporting our racks more stable. Got a whopping 9mpg on the drive home & it ran in 5th most of the drive. I'm guessing it must have been a pretty good headwind.
Can't imagine the GPM I'd be getting hauling a 30' trailer with the same front surface area.

Towing my 24ft car hauler with my Dads 2500 Suburban which was gas got me a whopping 6-8mpg. That was towing at aroudn 70mph so you might get a little better going slower but not much. Those numbers are pretty much almost all highway as well.

Sounds about right. You'll never get good gas mileage while towing. Also, the V6 turbo motors are very efficient provided you're not on boost. At that point, they consume as much fuel or more as a V8. When you tow, you'll be on boost pretty much the whole time so...

The frontal area and weight is what matters. If you load it the same, you probably won't notice as much of a difference. In any case, buy what you need to move what you need to move. Really no other way around it right?

Yeah, our little 7x12 is somewhere in the `1500lb range when empty. It's just a big sail, even with the v-nose. Kill the cruise control & get a pretty decent air brake out of it.

Partly makes me wish we'd gone with the 3.5EB, but I think it's a particularly windy day, with a solid headwind. It didn't behave the same on the trip to their house (tailwind )

Thought about a toy hauler, but likely too small for what we would do with a bigger trailer. My in-laws actually just sold a toy hauler, but in that sort of case, we'd use it the same way we're using our cargo trailer, just to roll the racks in/out. Not as a mobile storefront.
Something similar to this, but much more heavily stocked, with racks on both sides, nearly the full length of the trailer.

That's a nice one. But would only suffice as a replacement for our current trailer.
If we upgrade, it'll be something big enough to convert into a mobile store.

Not a bad idea & I've seen some of those.
But, we currently have nearly 50 feet of closet rod in our gameroom/in-home shop that we've maxxed out & have no extra room. So a 30' trailer with a hi/low rack on one side & a single high rack on the other, with a couple dressing rooms at the front would be something like 60-70 feet, less what ever a side door would compromise from one side.

Livernois is on my radar. $600 for their proprietary tuner, not sure if that only comes with 1 tune. I'd want a DD tune & a tow tune.

Thought I'd stop in and say hello. Thread was referenced to me this morning. Good looking 2.7L. I'm leaving my 3.5L EB '13 Platinum at the dealer tomorrow when I pick up my '17 MDX SH-AWD Tech. A little sad to see the truck go, but really happy to get in the MDX. I was VERY active on the F150 forums (5 of 'em!) so let me know if you have any questions, etc.

Definitely tune it. Give Torrie McPhail at Unleashed a fair look. He's a man of few words, but his tunes speak loudly...and more importantly safely.

Pic of what I'm leaving behind...kinda mod'd...coilovers, tires, tune, and a bunch of other stuff!

Will definitely be doing some research & figuring out who has the best/safest 2.7 tune when the time comes.

Leading Edge Tuning is also an option, and they're only about 30 minutes from my house...

Hmm LET has gone down hill from the bit I've gathered lately. Not in his abilities, but definitely in his customer service...which is a BIG thing for me.

Torrie is awesome and very willing to work with the customer. He likes to datalog a lot though...and I mean A LOT. He'll continue to fine tune everything until he or you are happy and then you just get to smile and enjoy it. I tuned the '13 through 5 Star and they have a good reputation, but they are "email it and forget it". They have such a big data pool that their tunes are pretty spot on the first time. They just released a Version2 to their 2.7L tunes as well. \

I might be able to make you a sweet deal on a SCT Livewire TS+ as I'm not leaving the truck tuned. I've had it a year, and all you'd need to do is buy emailed tunes for it.

Thanks for the insight.
Have heard good things about Torrie from the Flex side. Still figuring out the tuning world with the EB. With the Mazdas I was looking heavily into, it was datalog, re-tune, datalog, re-tune & calibrate the tune to your vehicle.
A lot of the EB tunes seem to be off the shelf, plug & go options.

Hey. Been meaning to check in here. Did you find a new trailer yet?

I found a trailer company out of Indiana who is a vendor for Forest River's line of aluminum trailers. I love the Forest River brand (my toy hauler is a Forest River) and had no idea they had aluminum trailers. Got one being built as we speak and it has all the benefits of an aluminum trailer without the InTech, Featherlight, or ATC brand pricing premium.

No trailer updates, still rockin' along with the 7x12 we have.
Maybe down the road a bit. If so, it'll be something like a 8x30x10 that I can convert in to a mobile shop.

You'll definitely need to check those out then... especially if you're looking for an aluminum trailer. I'm getting a 7'x20' plus the 2' V-nose and it only weights like 200 pounds more than my 6'x12'. They have all different sizes and configurations. They even have car trailers with one side that opens... perfect for concession.
