Is this an a$$hole thing to do???
As I've said several times, I would've gotten over.
Would you not agree that the process of slowing down, and then trying to squeeze in between two cars in the slow lane might not only piss off the guy behind me even more, but also the one I'm have to push myself in front of in the other lane?
Some of the others posting are making this into a much bigger deal than me.

I'm not sure why the OP is getting so much flack here, obviously he wouldnt let him pass if he could, and didnt want a ticket for the speed the asshat was driving at. He brake-checked, ok bad move, but the big moral of this story is, the driver was too aggressively ..my god half you people aren't reading the whole post.
personally I would have slowed down then sped up to a bit faster than I was originally going, but if he still was aggressive I'd slow back down, I wouldn't completely block, but I would slow my pass. Now if the guy started honking on top of the high beams I'd move out of the way, since maybe it's a real emergency.
In summary
I dont think the OP did anything wrong except the brake check.
you should have put state lines between you 2so hed slow the fuck down.
same thing happened when i was going from MD to Pittsburgh -- none of the slow ppl i had been passing up were letting be get in so i just womped on it.

I
Cliffs:
- Was going about 78-80mph (in a 70mph zone) in the fast lane, passing others at a decent rate
- Had some asshat who comes flying up behind me going between 5-10 mph faster
-I'm still passing everyone at a decent rate, yet he proceeds to lay on his high beams like he has somewhere to go
-I'm brake check him, and then don't get over (when I usually would) once the slow lane is clear of other cars
- He flicks me off, and speeds up ahead of me approx. 1/4 mile and then goes the same speed as me for about the next 20 miles (mind you, my cruise control has been set at the same speed the whole time)

That said...probably would have done the same thing. Though I have been pretty docile lately. I just move over and hope to see a CHP light him up.

I'll also add I do a ton of interstate driving. There's no way the slower car line could be that long. 3, 4, 5 cars maybe?
And if there wasn't room to get between them, then it should not have taking more then a few seconds of speeding up to pass them since they were all bunched up.

I've actually been behind a truck that was hooked up on a 2 lane highway. I came up behind him going not super fast, maybe 75 or so and he was going probably 65-70 in the fast lane. He brake checked me and I was behind him for maybe 5 minutes before I decided to try to pass him in the right lane. He then went into the right lane to cut me off, I went back to the fast lane and he did the same, he wouldn't let me pass brake checking me each time. He would then speed up and slow down. Luckily my exit came up in 10 minutes after that or so because I was livid and might have done something stupid.
I say the fast lane should go at the speed of the fastest drivers. If there is someone on your ass you are going too slow. Move over, let him pass, and then go back in the fast lane if that is where you want to go.

Stupidest thing I've ever seen and this is soooo bad. I'm traveling through the catskills, it's damn near a blizzard at least 4" of powder on the road and this is a BACK road. We come up on an ambulance, lights and sirens a blazing, but it's only doing 20mph. I'm like wtf is going on here......there's someone in a car in front of the ambulance that wont pull over. Now I dont mean wont pull over right away, this person wouldn't pull over period. We get into a small town(15min. later) and the driver finally turns onto another road, the closest hospital was still 20mi away. Poor guy in the back of that.....absolutely unbelievable.
Sort of off topic, sort of on topic - I know most of us will move over if we're in the left and a car comes up moving faster than us, but assuming you don't and they wait a minute then flash the brights, do you get angry or move?
When I was growing up flashing brights was a polite way to ask someone to move over. *Everyone* did it, in fact they taught it to us in drivers education. No now one does it, and the people that do get the finger. I think that sucks.

Some stubborn-ass motherfuckers in here.
If someone's going faster than you, you find a way to get out of the way. Simple. If there's a string of slow people, I would've slapped the blinker on and waited for one of the right-lane people to slow down so I can move in temporarily. Never had a problem doing that.
If you go around thinking you won't move just because someone's being a jackass and giving you shit, you're asking for some potentially big-time trouble.

I'm not too stubborn, but more often than not, if someone is being an a$$ and I happen to be a a bad mood, I might piss them off for 1 or 2 minutes. Now if I was in a major city, no freakin way, I dont want to chance getting shot, but I live in the country and if someone did what the person in question(not the OP) most people here would flip out on them. Don't get me wrong in NY you're never supposed to be in the left lane except for passing, but out of staters just cruise in the fast lane all the time. It really get aggravating..so I see both sides of this. I defended the OP, because there are rare chances where you could be stuck in the lane or end up really pissing off another motorist by cutting them off so idk . They really should bring back the flash rule. I'll start doing it, but from 100ft or more away. Seems perfectly reasonable

I almost never get any lights flashed at me because I am either a) usually going the fastest or b) because when I see someone hauling I move over.
I only get pissed when they flash their lights and there is obviously a car in front of me that I can't get around. What pisses me off even more are the cops who are doing 100+ with no lights on, tailgating every guy until they move but this is a whole new topic.
Apparently my internet sucks so much my last response didn't load
Flashing lights has always been ok - given the right circumstances. If coming up on someone fast and they obviously don't see you (i.e. getting the fuck out of your way) then its ok to flash the lights - they will put on a signal and it's fine to relax until they get out of the way.
Leaving high beams on - only ok when the fucker is parked in the fast lane.

I would have just gotten out of his way and let him go. Don't really see the reason you needed to do all of that. Just move and let him speed to his destination.Worse case I would have hit the brakes to freak him out a bit and to slow down to move over into the lane of slower cars, let him go, then just resumed in the fast lane.
Damn this is going on pretty good! It is rare that you can't get over to the right, but it does happen in small stretches. Also there is really no point in arguing who was legally in the right or wrong, they were both speeding so there is no right (cuz I never speed). I do find it sort of funny how adamant some are about "getting over at all costs to let the speeder by", its a busy highway and you can't always have it your way. Everyone would have been better served had they exercised just a little patience. When you get an assclown like that behind you just ignore him, get over when you can, and let him be the one all frustrated, not worth your time, that is my opinion anyway.

On the drive in today an A4 changed into the left lane in front of me from behind some trucks. He then proceeded to go 2 MPH faster than the trucks but I was patient and waited. The BMW328 behind was not so patient and was right on my ass. So I was stuck behind a slow poke while getting poked from behind!
Eventually the road cleared up but this guy still stayed on the left lane. I got to 2 car lengths behind him and still no go, so I flashed the HID's and he finally moved over. As I passed him I saw that he was on the phone.
I guess that Audi car commercial is right: Audi drivers drive while chattering to their wives/girlfriends, BMW drivers like to have their noses up people's asses while Acura drivers like myself are civilized and responsible drivers

My rule is if I do 10mph over the posted limit to pass a slower string of vehicles then I'm being resonable in taking this chance safely. However, if someone comes up behind me while I'm doing this and going even faster flashing their lights, I continue (10mph over) until it is safe to move past the leading slow vehicle and move over ASAP. I am concentrating and more concerned with what is in front and to the side of me than some fawktard in my rearview who is unreasonably impatient.
I usually will not 'brake check' anyone unless they are being really wreckless. When this occurs, I use my emergency brake because the rear lights don't come on and/or let off the gas to slow down and let the asshat pass by.
I don't think you were unreasonable in how you handled the situation, except for maybe the brake check.

Yes but if you are gonna bring the law into it, that only applies to people passing cars doing less than the posted speed limit, not people who are grossly exceeding said limit(I think).
now I have a question since this thread is beat to death anyway.
What do you guys do when stuck behind a car on a smaller two lane road? I have this happen to me constantly on my way to work. people going 45mph in a 55mph zone and they dont just pull over and let you by. Just wondering if there is some old standard that isn't used as much. since it's frustrating as hell.

:thumbsdown" for brake checking. IMO, that was probably the biggest dick move in the story.
As for him flashing you, not every high beam flash is necessarily a "dick move." Of course him tailing you while doing it might indicate otherwise.
Next time, take heed the wise words of Ludacris, "Move bitch, get out the way."

flashing high beams is an asshole move, as well as the light is right in your eyes!! ive done it a couple times to really slow people in the left lane. BTW i wouldnt brake check anyone unless your trying to get insurance money ha alot of people are careless or arent paying enough attention. you wouldnt wanna get into an accident

You people don't seem to understand...it's not YOUR fast lane. It's THE fast lane.
I don't care if you're doing 120mph, if someone wants to go faster than you, move out of the way. The cops are hiding in the bushes to watch for those excessive speeders, it's not your job.
Check braking is just retarded. You may be pissing the guy behind you, but then there's an innocent person behind him who's going to slam into him, etc. At those speeds it's very dangerous and unexcusable.
