yea just measure length and width
take off the black trim and see what kind of tabs are holding it down

I don't belive it would fit because, the 02 tl came with the 5 spd tranny IIRC. If you look at the #s on the shift plate it should be different than the ones in your car, as well as the design and location of the 1 gear is different than that of the 5 spd tranny.

The shiftplate itself will fit, but you will loose the ability to manually gate shift into 1 since there is no cut out to get into that gear. Also the numbering of that shift plate indicator won't be correct, for a '99 it is P R N D 3 2 1 whereas for 00-03 it is P R N D 4 3 2 1

You can still buy the shiftplate and just use your original indicator. It's not often that people shift all the way down to 1 manually.
