"Wish List"

Things that are realistic or at least somewhat realistic, but you just can't get right now. What kind of photo-related things do you wish you could get? Or, things that you have been wanting to get but have been putting off due to other commitments.

Also, if you see something and know of other options or possibilities that we might just not have heard of, let us know.

A couple for now:

Wacom Techno Cintiq 21UX 21-Inch Interactive Pen Display PC Tablet

I know there's a 12WX but I feel like I would feel limited by the 1280x800 resolution. I guess I'd have to try it to be sure. Ideally I'd want something in between 12 and 21, like a 17" 1680x1050 would be nice. Anyways.

are we talking reasonable or ridiculous?

Reasonable:
an upgrade from my 18-55VR(a little more reach would be nice)
30 or 35mm prime
nice, sturdy tripod
SB600

Ridiculous:
D300
Sigma 10-20 HSM

All you need is a 1.4 unless you have fast long primes. A 2x doesn't work well unless it's a 300mm 2.8, 400 2.8 or so.

Ah, ok. 1.4x it is, then. I was thinking it would be good on my 70-200 f/2.8 as a cheaper alternative to a 100-400.

i'll probably buy a 580ex II soon, and the next lens on my list is a 17-40 f4L then maybe an 85 1.8

but a more unrealistic list would include a 35L and 85L

Remember your 50D is cropped at 1.6 already.

Unless you have money to burn, the 85 1.8 will be just fine. I had a 85L, was to use it for stage work, it fell through and I only used it about three times. Sold it for what I paid for it though. price increases FTW. But the 35L is a beauty of a lens.

I'll assume you mean the 35 1.4L. What do you think about the FF vignetting on that lens?

Yes, there's only one 35L, never had a problem with vignetting.

I was seriously considering that lens but then I read a good number of reviews that said it had vignetting issues on FF.

well anyways thanks!

I currently have some off camera flash equipment in my sights. I'm just trying to decide if I want to go with a basic shoot-through umbrella setup or if I should spring for a "hotshoe softbox" like the Lastolite EzyBox. I'm also trying to see if there's a way I can use a regular photo tripod as a stand for holding a reflector (Wimberly Plamp?).

I would like to get into some of this, but total clueless about it. I plan on taking some lighting workshops this Spring.

Realistic:
EF-S 10-22
Some white balance card

On the radar, but not imminent:
Off camera lighting
wide, fast prime

In the future:
Either 50D replacement or full-frame (maybe 5DII) Would need to supplement my lenses if going full frame.
100-400 (Is there any reason to consider the 400 f5.6 over this other than price?)

The 400 has a sharper picture, but as Dan mention it doesn't have IS, so he got the 300 4.0 IS. But you can find a used one for $900, I think would be worth it.

Realistic list:
EF-S 10-22mm
EF 500mm

Way out there list:
1Ds MkIII
EF 800mm

Supposedly the 400mm f/5.6 also focuses faster than the 100-400mm, however you give up the versatility of the zoom in the 100-400mm. I was faced with the same choice and went with the 100-400mm. Depends on what you want to do with it.

For the not-too-distant future, I plan on renting one or the other for a trip to Yellowstone if that happens. Maybe even another body (50D or 5DII). Which 400mm capable lens would you recommend?

hows the sharpness on that 100-400? is it anything that makes you shake your head when you see it? or is it like, tolerable? or, is it negligible?

any interest in the Nikons?

yea, I really don't have any type of plan on buying an 85L. Seems like the 85 1.8 has great iq, and much faster AF.

I have though made hypothetical scenarios to try and justify buying a 35L though. Like selling all my lenses, or debating whether I should get a 28 1.8, 50 1.4, and 85 1.8 or just a 35L....

my camera really hasn't gotten much use as of late though so I'm not inclined to spend much money on it. Just got to plan another trip so I have an excuse for buying another couple lenses.

Srika - I have no complaints with the sharpness of the 100-400. Any softness/focus issues with my pictures are due to my errors, not issues with the lens. I would buy the lens again in a heartbeat. All the wildlife pics on my flickr site were taken with the 100-400:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ken_from_md/

I've never shot with a Nikon so I can't comment on their stuff. I do know at least one Nikon photog who bought a Canon DSLR, the XTi I think, just to use the EF 400mm f/5.6 lens. You can't go wrong with either one.

That 400 5.6 was a lens that I thought about trading for when I was selling off my Canon gear. But that would have meant keeping a Canon body.
