I suppose one could live with the battery issue, but now reading other reviews out there, folks are claiming the same thing. The GPS eats the battery.

Just turn it off until as a time it would be needed.

There's also a SX220 that's identical but doesn't have GPS.

YOu can read some current reviews of models of lots of different makes here:

www.dpreview.com

I've been out of the P&S game so long now, I don't know who makes a good one anymore.

In my opinion the only choice WAS Canon for P&S....but I think times have changed.

I never liked Canon P&S to be honest. But I think you'll find the S95 and S100 very suitable for you needs. Honestly, the best P&S I have owned was a Casio. It's old now.. I tried Nikon, Canon and Sony after the Casio.. none of them performed as well if you could believe it. Then I went DSLR.

I've heard good things about the S95, but was trying to avoid spending the extra money. Maybe I have to rethink my stingy ways.

I think most P&S offer a good amount of different "effects" now, but a few years ago I think Canon was the first to do the built-in "selective coloring" which I thought was pretty damn cool....

Personally, for me, I'm a wide angle whore... If I was going to buy a P&S today, it'd have to have the widest lens... I know for awhile the the Panasonic line had the widest...

You will have to pay a little more for a better working camera.

its not 230 but you can probably pick it up now than wait for shipping. either way if you ask for 1 day shipping you might save a few but id do this only because of the hassle of just in case its not the camera you hoped to be.

I could care less about the GPS function, so I will turn that off. I got her an extra battery too. I'm gonna take it to the shop tonight and play with it for a while and see if theres any focus issues with it.

I never got a chance to test out the camera before I had to wrap it. Played with it a bit this morning, so far so good. I havent seen any noticeable focusing issues yet. Need to toss the memory card in the computer and take a better look though.
