Wife's Point and Shoot --- Sucks!

I picked up a Canon SD1400 maybe a year ago? Good reviews, so why not?

Every friggin' picture she takes is blurry. Thinking it was user error, I started taking shots and the camera just doesn't seem to work properly. Lots of blurry photos. I'm not sure if she is moving the camera too quickly thinking the shot is done, or what, but this damn things has to go. I get better results, but nothing to get all excited about.

Any recommendations on a GOOD point and shoot. Needs to be small (like the form factor of the canon). Would be nice to run and grab one today, if possible.

Thanks!

DSLR's offer much better Auto Focus and Sensor Size {APS and FF} at cost of more $$, weight and size. The optics are so much better also.

Got my wife a Canon A1100 IS after she struggled w my older Canon 20D APS C DSLR. The A1100 IS was good and had 11MP but no DSLR.
Note - Stay away from Point Shoot Cameras w more MP - the sensor in PS are way small and too many MP are too small for good light and AF.
Canon is finally moving away from the MP race and that will be good for light latitude, better focus, and sharper pictures. MP is market scheem.
Now she wants a I Phone.
The I Phone 4S is a good pict taker and lighter for her. Carry 1 thing instead of 2 also.

Wife's will always want new cameras like shoes.

I know you had a bad experience with Canon but my first recommendation would be the Canon S100. It has a pretty fast lens (when wide) and a larger sensor than most compacts to help with low light. http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canons100/

Another option would be the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS10. Not as compact as the Canon but has a lot of good features and is highly regarded. http://www.dpreview.com/products/pan...asonic_dmczs10

Yep.

I need a P+S that is completely idiot-proof. She's using my DSRL, but she wants a pocket camera.

My wife has a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH25 and loves it. Picture quality is great and it's small enough she keeps it in her purse.

Hmm. I've had four Canon point-and-shoots over the last ten years and they've all been fantastic. In fact, the shots in my 'Foggy Night' thread were done with a Canon P&S.

Have you considered a four thirds or micro four thirds.. really a great POS replacement without having to buy a DSLR.

Look at reviews for:

Panasonic GF series (GF1 and GF2 in particular)
Olympus EP series

If it looks like too much for your wife to deal with then my next suggestion is the Canon S95.

It's fantastic camera, large aperature f/2.0 that is packed with features.

Canon has a newer version, the S100.. appears to be even better.. but it's new and priced as such.

Joe, DigitialRev just did a S100 video, so i would check that out.

problem with the GF1 is either they are expensive. (going for 1k) or hard to find. and the GF2 well the GF1 is alot better. It just depends if the OP is on a budget for it.

I've heard good things about the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V.
I sold my PowerShot and just use my iPhone 4S as my P&S now. I just don't use the P&S that much to justify getting one, and the new camera on the 4S is actually really good.

The S100 is better but for $100 more.. I don't think it's worth it.

GF1's are being phased out.. so the price can be hefty. I heard okay reviews for the GF2 and GF3 but I don't have experience with them. DigRev said the touchscreen wasn't user friendly.. For pictures only.. it's tough to beat the GF1.

I love my Canon SD980IS. About 2 years old now, was the flagship point and shoot back then. Still takes great pictures (I went around on Long Beach Island, NJ to take some pictures last spring and I thought they came out pretty damn nice for a P+S)

I bought a sony NEX- 5 so I can take pics of when my son was born and I am very impressed with it, it's small and easy to use, I was thinking of going with a cannon or Nikon but their DSLRs are too big. I would reccomend it I you are looking for something small and good picture quality.

^^ As your kid gets older, you'll find that a p&s will not keep up with him.

For me, it was 11 years ago, had a p&s, as my son started to crawl, then walk, then when about two years old, it couldn't keep up with his moving. I had to go back to a film camera.

P&S are better than 11yrs ago, but low light and movement are still the weakest for them.

The S95 is a class above.. it would be the only compact p&s that I would consider. That Amazon deal is awesome.

It's not an SLR. It's a micro four thirds. A poor one at that.

It is not a Single Lens Reflex, it has no mirror. As I said, p&s are better today than they have been.

You're right, it's not a DSLR but it's also not a micro 4/3 camera as it has an APS-C sensor in it (larger than a micro 4/3 sensor - same size as a Nikon D3100, 5100, 7000 for instance, so it should have better low light abilities, just to name one theoretical advantage). In my opinion, the achilles heal of the Sony NEX system is the lack of good lenses but that could change in the near future.

I should have known.. I'm not sure why they packed the APS-C in that tiny body. It doesn't measure up to it's DSLR counterparts and I don't think it's because of the glass.

Yes, a favorable camera, still a little short on lens. But an adapter ring can fix that. I held an NEX 5 about a week ago. It's like a pack of smokes with rocks in it. Too small for my liking, I think a little too small. Considering the size of the lenses that can be used, no balance.

The SX230 is going back. The blurry issue still remain, which lends itself to user error vs. poor quality. However, canon put the flash in an awkward place, making the user adjust how to hold the camera. Oh and battery life sucks. So back it goes.

Looking for suggestions again. Just keep me out of the DSLRs. Needs to be a compact P&S.

Thanks!
