I can't speak very well to the Nikon lenses, but I wonder if they have an equivalent to Canon's EF 100 f/2.8 macro. I don't have it, but it's supposed to be very good for that type of shooting. 100mm is a good length for macro and gives you a nice working distance. It would also work well as a portrait type lens.
Others on this forum are better versed in macro, like Dan and Jupitersolo.
