I'm so surprised that no one else (so far) owns a Pentax.

They make really good cameras for normal photography purposes (i.e. parties, get togethers, etc..)

My first camera was my father's old pentax.

It was a spotmatic II....not the super common K2.

It was great....shutter busted after awhile...and thats when I made the move over to Nikon....well, my dad did....surprised me with my N90s after the Pentax croaked.

But I don't think pentax has done much in the way of SLR's in a long time. They have a great medium format body.

Their SLR line isn't as progressed as Nikon or Canon. However their standard point and shoot line (film and digital) is very strong. That's why I I'm surprised that not that many people have them.

Their middle tier digital cameras are great for the price and offer many features.

What do you mostly shoot? Any galleries for us to browse?

The 1D is a nice camera, but unless you need the 1D's AF performance, really the 5D or 35D would be better choices. 4.1MP doesn't give you much to crop if you're going to be printing anything around 8x10 @ 240dpi. High ISO on the 1D isn't anything to write home about either.

The 1d's autofocus is really the main reason I'm in the market for one, along with the 8 frames/second. The durability of the 1d body is also something I have really come to admire.

Likewise, I like the 1.3 multiplication of the imager compaired to the 1.6 of the 20d and 350d.

I am honestly not a fan of the 350 (xt) as it just feels to small and pastiky (if that makes sense). The 20d is the next alternative - great camera, love it. I've also been researching the D200 Nikon - which looks to be a steller camera, but Nikon forgot to produce enough.

I don't know. It may be old and have bad high ISO banding issues, but I'm stuck between it, 20d and D200.

I was actually referring to the 35D which is replacing the 20D in a month or two. Should be announced at PMA at the end of February.

The D200 is readily available. Some places are sold out but most of the big stores have stock coming in every week. As with all Nikons, the D200 has a 1.5x cropped sensor, which has pros and cons.

I was heavily leaning towards the 35D being my next camera, but after giving it some thought, I want a FF sensor. The 5D will probably drop in price quickly so maybe in a year it'll be down around $2K.

Also there's a leaked spec sheet for the 3000D. Appears to be an ultra-affordable DSLR based on the old rebel (no clue how reliable this is though):

I'm anxious to see the replacement for the 20d. If the form factor includes a battery grip built in, that would be great.

As I said, I am a big fan of the speed in the 1d series cameras. The 5d is an incredible camera, nothing wrong with it at all, I just want more than 3 f/s.

The 1d is the closes I can get to a FF sensor for $1,100.

Please, if you can, talk me out of it. Because I know that there is better. I just don't have the budget for a 3k dollar body right now.

Best,

Best,
The grip shown on the 35D is optional. If you ask me it looks a little funky, but I'm sure it's functional. I like the looks of the grip on my Rebel better. Plus, if you're just going to have one SLR, it's nice to be able to take the grip off. There are a lot of times I don't want to be carying around the extra weight, but if I know I'm going to be shooting all day or a lot of portraits, the grip is great.

The only two knocks I have against the 1D is that it is relatively low-res and its high-iso performance is far surpassed by even the Rebel XT. Otherwise, it's still an awesome camera and should serve you well if you're into shooting a lot of sports. It sounds like a machine gun when you have it high speed drive.

I do agree that it is nice to take the grip off. Then again, if I'm just shooting for fun, with friends at parties or our and about, I take my little Canon G5.

The 4.1MP imager is small, I know. And that is one of its biggest downfalls. Honestly, if the 1d MKII were a little cheaper now I'd buy a used version. My profession is in the field of television/broadcast so photography is not a job, it is just a big hobby. But, then again I have no clue what I'm ever going to shoot. I was at a track event last year shooting with my E20n (3 f/s and the slowest autofocus ever) a 1d would have been so great with a nice 200mm lens. Then again, I'm shooting scenic frames of the sun setting in michigan and a 8 or 10 or 12MP image would be so much better.

Who knows, maybe I'll just wait it out and not do any impulse buying.

Best,

So 3000D = Rebel XT replacement and 35D = 20D repalcement?

Can't believe I'm asking.

:troutslap

The 3000D slots in below the Rebel XT in the lineup. It's going to be super cheap to lure those who were considering prosumer cameras. The 35D is going to be replacing the 20D.

So the lineup would be something like this:
3000D
Rebel XT
35D
5D
1DMK2N
1DsMK2

I wouldn't be surprised if the 1Ds got a larger screen and an 'N' tacked on to it's name.

My crystal ball says next year we will see the 1D and the 1Ds merge together into a FF body with a high-speed crop mode like the D2x.

Have a couple of older olympus digital cameras, but recently got the Powershot SD550 7MP. Its a sweet camera for a subcompact. Very impressed.

The D200 is a great looking camera. I was very tempted to put an order in for one. For the price, it is hard to beat.

Main camera rig:

Canon 20D
EF-S 17-85
EF 70-200 2.8 IS
50 1.4

On the way:
EF-S 10-22 OR another "L" lens, haven't decided yet (maybe EF 24-70 or EF 24-105; 20D needs a wide end, though and I have the 17-85).
580 EX Speedlite

Backup cam: Canon A95, hardly used since the 20D made the scene. Nothing beats an SLR.
