Great shots, so that's what the sky looks like when there's no haze. Did you have a polarizer on, or did you do that in photoshop?

Wow, beautiful coloring! I love the crispness of those photos.

I shot this one just this evening. I looked outside at the evening sky and this was the only bright spot left, just a passing thunderhead that I think looks like cotton candy.

I had a Hoya SMC Pro1 filter. It really works great! The first time I used this filter, I freaked out. I looked through the lens and I was like..... wow! So with the filter and a little Photoshop you get excellent results!

I really like the first one. Nothing like a cornfield to warm the heart of a midwesterner.

I really like HDR pics. I'm assuming this is only something you can do in PS? I wonder if PS Elements has this capability (that's what I have).

There are a bunch of software packages out there that let you produce hdr photos. Apart from the software, you need to take multiple exposure shots.(disregard if you already knew that)

Thanks. I did know about the multiple exposures, but wasn't sure about how to put them all together. I think HDR is really cool and would like to try it out sometime.

of course they are . I guess I just wanted to make sure. You have to shoot in RAW to do HDR right? And, your pics have to be 32-bit to use Photomatix?

<- HDR nub. I was reading up on it last night.. and in NYC I took some bracketed shots to work with... but not in RAW. :< I installed Photomatix but the filter option is grayed out... so I was thinking it was because I didn't have the right filetypes. I read some more and somewhere it said the images have to be 32-bit... I don't know.

Ha....HDR sounds a bit complicated for a beginner such as myself...

Maybe I'll just stick to reading "Understanding Exposure" for the time being.

You can create HDR with regular JPGs. I believe you just have to specify the exposure on each imported picture. Shooting in RAW just simplifies it. I don't believe your photos have to be in 32-bit. Photomatix will convert if needed.

It was indeed a beautiful day around Chicago yesterday. I actually shot about 650 frames which more than tripled my previous single day record. A vast majority of the pics ended up being garbage "images" but it didn't particularly matter in this case.

Hint 1: I was in Northwest Indiana.
Hint 2: There's only one or two frames I can actually post here.
I'll leave it at that.

The only difference the file type makes is how much data is stored in the image. A JPEG is 8-bits whereas a 16-bit RAW file contains 10 to 12 bits of data. More bits means smoother gradients, which will let you get away with more processing without introducing noise and other artefacts into your image. You can capture the same amount of information using JPEGs as you can in RAW, but it will just take more images with less gap between them to cover all the detail. In short, shoot RAW... it's just easier.

Sometimes the terminology for the bits contained in an image gets a little twisted. An 8-bit image has 8 bits of data for each of the three colors, so every pixel requires 24 bits of data to describe the color. A 16-bit image needs 48 bits of data for every pixel. Jumping up to a 32-bit image does nothing other than gobble up space. If you create an image that requires more than 16-bits per color to reproduce, you're going to have a very hard time figuring out how to output that image. Most LCD's on the market today are 6-bits with dithering to get them up to 8-bits. Some high-end printers will let you print a 16-bit image, but you're really only getting 12 to 14-bits of color information. Some colors will have more, some less, depending on the color gamut the printer/ink/paper combo can reproduce.

All of my HDR work is done with the Farrar Focus scripts in Photoshop. In the field, I take anywhere from 5 to 9 photos spaced one stop apart and select 4 or 5 of them to feed into the HDR script. If the images are too blown out or too dark I throw them out because they will affect color accuracy. You just need one photo that captures the highlights without clipping and the rest of the photos in the range are used to increase shadow information.
