Sony/Pany new AVCHD Video Format

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060511-6815.html

Even as a targeted consumer product this format makes almost no sense to me. Only 20 minutes (or less) per media and it has all the optical disc uh-oh's you know and love (dust, sratches, fingerprints, etc...). Of course you can record to SD cards to avoid this, but then you're shelling out $'s and probably limited to the same or less capacity. Ummm... yeah. I definitely want my next camcorder based on this. WTF is wrong with going after better encoding and higher data density on tape?

1) Amazing that Panasonic and Sony...Sony....agreed on a unified format.

2) Mpeg4/h.264 encoding...> HDV Mpeg2

3) Sony will push the use of optical discs, booooo. Panasonic will push the use of SD cards...very smart.

Its kinda of like Sony pushing their professional XD Cam system which is Blu Ray disc recording to the camera, I hate the idea of shooting a camera with a moving laser. And Panasonics use of P2 solid state recording to cards to be dumped to computers....which is very smart and the future of aquisition. I own a HD panasonic camera that uses P2, that I currently have in a rental fleet at a popular rental house.

Reading the specs. This might actually be a very decent and affordable consumer HD movie format for people.

SD cards are cheap now, and getting cheaper...Nothing worng with shooting home movies on SD, swap cards, download video, keep shooting. One time investment.

Tape is dying. And faster then ever now with Panasonics P2 media.

Why do I want to shoot on tape, when I shoot on a card, pop it into my computer, and import and edit instantly. A much simpler and easier workflow.

Tape is subject to drop outs, and these are worse when you get them on HDV.

The future is streaming to HD, and Removeable solid state media...and the future is now.
