shutter life expectancy

I'm just curious... what's the shutter life expectancy on a typical dSLR... are they different from brand to brand?

I guess this is a two parter thread.... How many shutter actuations do y'all have and how long have you had your camera?

Are there any kind of maintenance on the shutter?

They are different from brand to brand, but a typically of a new camera today. 50,000 for entry level, prosumer 100,000. Pro bodies 250,000 and more.

^ I concur.
If there was any truth to what i was told, the 1D classic I had had gone through ~300K actuations before the shutter was changed, I got it with about 100K on it.

The D300 is either 100K or 150K.
I've had it for about 10 months and have between 7-7.5K on it.
Not enough.

do the attached numbers to each shot have something to do with the actuation count? Like for example... looking at the last picture I took... the number is 100-3999 and the picture before is 100-3998... so I'm right under 4k?

i tried it for a friend awhile back it worked.

yes and no cuz when you get to 9999 it will reset. You can find the amount of shutters in you exif for pictures when you don't edit your photos. thru flickr or adobe bridge. I think after you edit with photoshop you lose the shutter count on some cameras.

I think it depends.
I've used the same memory card ever since I've had the camera, so I know I can rely on that.

You start using multiple cards though, I think you got start adding, or something else.
Not sure.

Yeah, my Canon has the option of naming new photos as the total number of actuations. I'm on IMG_8536 now.

I don't think anyone here will ever keep a camera long enough - or use it extensively enough - to the point of worrying about the shutter needing replacement. Most of us will probably have moved on to a new model well before then.

And then again you can get a "lucky" one and have it go out on you within months of owning it.

I have not, but have read a few posts of those who have.

that's actually why I started this thread... because I also read somewhere about someone's Sony Alpha... but it was ONE case... not like it's common.

A few comments:
Some SLRS have the option of 'continuing' the numbering.
So if you swap to a different card, you can reset your counter.

I've had my 40D for 17 months now, and have about 18K pictures.
I never hit 20K with either of my previous SLRs.

Also note that shutter replacement is about $400 or so.

- Frank

As stated, shutters last a hell of a long time, far more than any normal person would normally keep their camera for.

But something else to keep in mind - shutter replacement isn't horrifyingly expensive - maybe $400 including labor. Sounds like a lot, but you'd have to be shooting pictures for years.

Supposedly the MTBF for the shutter on my Canon XSi is 25k. I've had it since last July and I've taken ~ 13k pics. Higher end camera have much higher ratings on their shutters.

Wow that's quite low, but I guess for the price point you shouldn't expect much.

I'm just over 4,200 on my XSi. I've had it ~7 months.
