SD550 or SD600/SD630/SD700IS?
SD550 or SD600/SD630/SD700IS?
I officially recruited my aging S50 strictly for work purposes now.
I had my heart set on an SD550, but as you know it, whenever I want to get something, there's always another one around the corner that's better. Canon recently introduced a few new models, the SD600, SD630 and SD700 IS. All three are 6.2 megapixels, but it appears that they are a bit greater in the feature department. Specs as follows:

I tend to like features and try to use them as much as I can. They do have some interesting features not on the 550 that I think i'd use too.

I'm in the same boat as you. I decided the reason to get the newer ones is the DIGIC II processor. It gives them startup time of 1 second, which is great for point-and-shoot. Along with making them faster in general, in all areas. Also, I don't think the .5" greater screen of the SD630 merits its $80 increase in price over the 600, or whatever that difference was. Like a 2.5" screen isn't big enough.
Make no mistake, the 550 is no slouch - in fact @ the place I looked (Ritz) - the 550 was $50 more than the 600.

I haven't priced them all out, but I believe the 600 is the cheapest, the 550 and 630 I can get for the same price, and I didn't check the 700 yet. I do know that the 630 gives you the bigger screen, no viewfinder (which I never use anyways) but it leaves little space for your hands when holding the camera to take a picture.
My mom just got the SD600 yesterday.
She called me with the same dilemma as you. I told her and my dad...YOu cant go wrong with either one...SD450 would be great for what you want, but the 600 has some newer features for better lowlight shooting. SD700 is only worth it if you really NEED Image Stabilization. And the screen on the SD630 isnt worth the price increase.
so the SD600 was the best compromise of the bunch. Mom retired her S50 to my dad
I tried to get it to give to my girlfriend...he told me to fuck off

I am looking at those cameras too....
The SD450 can be bought for less $220 or less, so I'm still considering that one.
The SD600 is cool because I want the low light picture quality.
I didn't like the SD630 just because I would be afraid to break the screen, and plus if I was running out of battery, I would like the option to just use viewfinder to get more pics out of the camera.
The SD700 looks really neat, especially with image stabilization....but not sure if the price would be worth it.

The SD700 is a steal at $499 considering it has an image stabilizer. Just for comparison, the EF 70-200 f/2.8 lens comes in both unstabilized and stabilzed models, but the stabilized model is $550 more. The fact that you can get a whole camera for less than that is impressive.
That being said, it may still be expensive for the average buyer. As Sarlacc mentioned, you can't go wrong with any of them, so name your price and buy accordingly.

1/1.8" sensor is bigger than 1/2.5" sensor. The SD550 has a less dense sensor, meaning that the pixels are larger, get it?
Imagine a population of people. When you say the population is less dense that means you have more space per person. Now, SD550 has 7.1 mp to fit into a 1/1.8" sensor while the newer models have 6 mp to fit into a 1/2.5" sensor. By my calculation there are more space per pixel (the pixels are bigger) on the SD550.

can some of the photo gurus decipher what these differences mean? shouldn't it mean that the 550 will take better pix than the 600? there's other info in that thread too. Apparently the 550 was not directly "replaced" by any of the other models. It stood on its own design and specs, closest camera to it is the 500.
The biggest difference between the two are the image sensors.
SD550 = 1.8" sensor packed with 7.1 million photo sensors.
SD600 = 2.5" sensor packed with 6.2 million photo sensors.
SD550 = 1.8" sensor packed with 7.1 million photo sensors.
SD600 = 2.5" sensor packed with 6.2 million photo sensors.
^^^^^ ok I shoulda known that 1.8" and 2.5" was wrong...
so this should say:
so what does THAT mean... in terms of pic quality.
SD550 has 1/1.8" sensor while SD600 has 1/2.5" you making it look like SD600 has a bigger CCD when it fact, it's smaller. not even the top SLRs have a 2.5" sensor.
SD550 = 1/1.8" sensor packed with 7.1 million photo sensors.
SD600 = 1/2.5" sensor packed with 6.2 million photo sensors.
SD600 = 1/2.5" sensor packed with 6.2 million photo sensors.
some more info... read the thread for more but I'm picking a few of the posts that stand out...
so the SD600 is as thin as the 400-series... hmm.
yes MP doesn't mean anything, BUT, SD550 still beats SD600 in image quality (not sure about SD700 yet).
The only thing good about SD600 is its smaller size, but SD550 isn't that much bigger, so the prices are the same I'd recommend SD550.

compared to the sd500/550 i think the only differences are the weight (sd600 1 oz less), the 600 adds an 800 ISO setting and the 600 has a 2.5" screen (same as the 550) vs. the 2" for the 500. The big difference is megapixels though (sd500/550 has 7, sd600 has 6).
I give the sd500/550 a slight edge

I think you guys are missing the big picture on the difference between the the SD5xx and the SD600. The biggest difference is the lens. The lens was the biggest difference going from the SD400 to the SD500. The lens for the SD500 is a larger lens more comparable to the lens on the standard S series cameras. The SD600 has a comparable body to the SD400 series and I'd imagine a similar lens which in many reviews was noted as having more trouble with soft corners than the larger SD500. While people make a big fuss about pixels, people often forget that lens quality makes a huge difference in pic quality moreso than megapixels. My 3mp Pany with the 12x Leica zoom takes pics on par if not better than my SD500. So when pocketability isn't an issue I'm bringing the Pany.
So the combination of less megapixels and the smaller lens are the reasons the SD5xx will have better PQ over the SD600. Will it matter for many consumers considering the difference in price? maybe not. Price and a little more pocketability might be more of a consideration than the difference in pic quality.

SD600 is the upgrade to the SD450 (square body)
SD700 is the upgrade to the SD550 (tapered body)
do the SD550 and SD700 are higher end in their respective generations. It's strange that Canon is not phasing out their older models while still introducing new ones...

why is everyone comparing the SD600 to the SD550? because 600 is bigger than 550?
i think it goes like this
SD400 --> SD450 --> SD600/SD630
SD500 --> SD550 --> SD700IS

my SD 550 I got 2 weeks ago is sick! love it, plus I found it @ best buy for 369.99 and got 30 bucks back, well actually torwards a 1 gig card for the camera, so I only paid like 40 bucks more for the card and can take about 900 shots on one of the higher resolutions, I love it...
gotta love the 7.1 , mega pix...

main difference is the screen size. other specs are pretty much identical, I am quite sure.
is this a good deal
$350 inc shipping? No way. You can get a brand new one from Dell for $258 ($244 + tax, free shipping). Check Slickdeals and Techbargains. Get a 1GB SD card from newegg.com for around $30-40. So under $300 for both.
well this is news to me. I didn't know the SD500 and 550 also have DIGIC II...
This is a good summary of the differences between SD500 and SD550 - it is not just the screen size, it has 3 extra shooting modes. Worth the extra $50? Your call.
ALSO. People are saying the LCD is more prone to breakage/scratching on the SD500. This is not to say its invincible on the 550. Any LCD is prone to those things. But reviews tend to consistently say the LCD on the 500 is one of its weak points. Nothing a good case and some TLC won't take care of, though.

Canon SD500 vs. Canon SD550, 2005-11-06
The Canon SD500 and Canon SD550 are both very capable digital cameras. While they are similar in many respects, the list price is not one. With the SD500's list price at $499.99 and the SD550's at $549.99, you might wonder what you are getting on the SD550 for that extra fifty dollars. Hopefully this comparison will help you find out.
The Similarities begin with the image processor. Both cameras utilize the DIGIC II image processor. According to the manufacturer this allows for "superb image quality through improved colour gradation and white balance accuracy". Since both cameras have this processor it affords an advantage to neither when deciding which camera to buy.
The similarities continue with the amount of mega pixels. The SD500 and SD550 each have 7.1 mega pixels. This means that pictures taken with these cameras will still be detailed when enlarged.
There are only really two differences between the SD500 and the SD550. The first difference is the size of the LCD screen. The SD500 has a two inch display. It may not be the biggest on the market, but it works well. On the other hand the SD550 has a two and a half inch display. The extra half inch on the SD550 does make it a little easier to make out details than on the SD500.
The second difference is the number of shooting modes. The SD500 has 13 shooting modes, which in my opinion is more than enough if someone was just looking to buy a camera to take on vacations or to family outings. The SD550 on the other hand has 16 shooting modes. Those extra shooting modes may come in handy for the more serious photographer.
I think it is safe to say that both the SD500 and the SD550 are good cameras. If you have the extra fifty dollars to spend I would suggest the SD550 with its half inch more screen and 3 extra shooting modes.

so ok..as i mentioned above..i was on my way to get the SD550..(circuit city)..i talked to the guy at the camera department and asked him a few questions/differences between certain cameras...i also mentioned to him that i have a powershot A80...and that i was interested in buying the SD550..he tells me that that my current A80 is actually better than the SD550 as far as features and shooting modes go...he says that the "powershot" series is better than the "SD"elph series..he told me that megapixels don't really make a huge difference...now i know it would make a difference if i was printing out poster size pics..but i wont be doing that..i just want a newer, smaller, better camera...so to make a long story short..i ended up not getting the SD550 yet ...i wanted to come here 1st and get more input...does this salesperson know what he's talking about or is he full of BS? when i asked him what he knew about cameras..he responded with "what i don't know about cameras...you don't need to know"
btw...sorry if i hijacked the thread...
btw...sorry if i hijacked the thread...
No, he doesn't know what he's talking about. But that describes the great majority of Circuit City salesppl.
BUT... if you already have an A80, and are happy with it, I think its ok to wait a little longer before getting a small one. I mean, the A80 isn't like, HUGE. And, it does take decent pics.
The SD1000 should be pretty sweet.

I just got my SD550 delivered here like, 20 mins ago. I'm checking it out. It fits a void for me, I have a D70 but its just too huge to take everywhere I want to. So this fits the "small camera" void. If I already had, say, a small digicam that I could fit in my pocket and took decent pics, I probably would have waited longer too.
