Saddle Mountain - Columbia River Gorge
So I managed to get a little hiking in this week while visiting family in Oregon. The weather was pretty crummy, but the hiking was good. Unfortunately no good lighting for our little HDR project, but thought I'd share some from the Saddle Mountain Trail anyway....
The early part of the trail actually had good footing, and some level track...just enough to suck you in.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/moxiephotos/1041032881/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1205/1041032881_deb63724b6_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="Saddle Mountain Trail" /></a>
After climbing 1000' or so, the visibility was diminishing, but still reasonable.

Now, after ~3000' gain, you can see why everything else I shot, was macro... (had already swapped lenses for the above shot).

At least the light was even (if scarce) for the macro shots. It was a soggy hike, but I can't complain about all the pretty water on the flowers.

very nice, I love the flowers especially. Also love the first shots documenting the growth of the fog.. and that one with the leaf with the waterdrops on it.. and that succulent is really nice too.

very nice shots. I love the first two, the fog really adds a lot to the pic, gives it a cool eerie feel. Macro shots are great too, the leaf and one purple flower shots are my favs.

the first one resembles a painting...
just has this kind of, "timeless" look... so hard to get.

Thanks for all the kind words! Yes, the hiking was exactly what I needed....now if I could only go do some more instead of heading to work today...
I know I dogged that lens a little in another thread...I'm liking it more, the more I use it.

Big Block go VROOOM!
Wndrlst, could I trouble you to elaborate on your sharpening technique(s)? Your screen-sized images are always nice and crisp without being overdone. I've never been happy with my own sharpening results for web sized images.

Wow..thanks guys! I'll work on a B&W conversion pronto! I'll think about the purchase price for those of you who want it on your walls...
Sharpening-wise - I read in a book (can't remember the name, but can find out) that a good way to avoid the white edge artifact that can come with sharpening, is to use Lab color. If you already do this, read no further...
Go to Image/Mode/Lab Color
<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa119/docmoxie/Picture1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
Then go to channels and select Lightness. Applying your sharpening here, apparently leaves your colors unadulterated, or something like that. (Sorry I don't have a more technical explanation.) It probably goes without saying, but I then use the standard Unsharp Mask (shift/command/s) and every photo is sharpened differently. When finished, just change it back to RGB. Hope that helps!

actually the "oh snap" is because i think its one of the first times (if not the first time) we've got to hear some of your techniques and I also like that you posted a screenshot of your Photoshop :P

My eye continues to be drawn to the soft colors, as well when I see them both side by side on Flickr. I amped the blacks & contrast pretty significantly on the B&W. Perhaps it should be softer? Or maybe it should just be color.
btw, I was obviously kidding about thinking of a price...if anyone would like a large file to print (of anything) just hollah on PM...

I hope you don't mind, I played with it a little. There are SO many ways to do this. This was quickly on my PC using elements. If you still have my wife's e-mail address and would send me the raw file, that would be great. If not I'll shoot you my address.

^^That one is better, better contrast, but I still like wndrlst's original color version. The fog in that shot is perfect and lends a real otherworldly quality to the image.

I like the color one as well, but my fascination with b&w always has me looking what it could be. Especially when I have a negative and I'm in the darkroom.

Well, here's another try. I think I forgot how to do something I wanted to try. I've got to figure that part out. I need to find a class or tutor to get me going again. I sent you the bigger file via pownce. Not as much contrast, but has more detail.
This image looks SO different on my displays, from MBP to my desktops Dell. Much cleaner on the MBP.

It always amazes me how much processing can influence the overall feel of a photo...thanks for posting it!
