btw, just for you. Smoked a CAO American DURING the wedding reception. My friend brought a travel humidor and hid it one of the planters outside

They say its being called a DSMC (digital still & motion camera)

Even if someone gave you a magical gift certificate for one of these, the preview pictures are definitely making it look like something that's far larger and less portable than pro SLR or even a medium format setup.
Honestly I doubt that, the body for the RED One is pretty small so I'm sure this wouldn't be any bigger.
Those are MINI XLR plugs. They use a break out cable for full size XLR ends. The connections next to that are mini BNC, same deal.
Same set up at the Red One.
Only the Epic was slated to use actual size connectors.
And since I bet this is the revamped scarlet, it will be small.
From what I can tell, I don't think the traditional still photography companies have much to worry about. That's by no means a knock against the new Red gear. I just think that if you're looking at the new gear from within the world of still photography, then the Red offerings are very much niche products.
So Jup, when are you putting in your order?

They just opened a whole new can of worms...but I gotta admit its some interesting stuff...

But the 617 sensor...I'll bet you all the landscape and large format shooters have just had their eyebrows raised.
Large format...if you read the brochure it lists the two mounts available. Also says RED has some coming soon.
Holy shit thats like Imax size
It looks to be about the size of a HVX with the mattebox, CF hard drives and all the goodies added on. The only thing I don't understand is that you can build something with the S35 brain thats has comparable or better performance then the original Red One, then whats the point of buying the original Red?
I want the 2/3 Scarlet though
, unfortunately its only 4.9mp in still mode though. If they come out soon enough I may pick up one of these instead of the D700 stuff I was gonna buy

At the moment I dont think any of these cameras are production ready.
Also, the chip might cost $XXX....but RED is all about accessories and configuring...that cost adds up QUICK.
I'd wait and see if I were you...but I'd still get the D700.
Man, hardly any news posts about it. Perhaps they are still digesting it:

How about this quote:
The completely over-the-top, what-have-they-been-smoking model is the Epic 617 with a 186X56mm 261 Megapixel sensor
- Frank

youd give up full frame for more money?

There's tons of aftermarket parts for the Red One already, so I'd bet that it'll be the same for the new Scarlet/Epic. I'm gonna wait and see what happens but it's very tempting...
That 617 sensor is cool and completely bonkers at the same time. Forget the magic that needs to happen to record and store a 261 megapixel video, what exactly are you going to use to play it back? Did I miss the 261 megapixel projector announcement today?
Landscape guys already have a bunch of options in the 6x17 market, including digital up to 160MP, and that's 2006 technology. http://www.roundshot.ch/xml_1/intern.../d925/f934.cfm

But it all goes back to shooting the best quality and downrezzing. Which is in theory better than just shooting at the lesser quality.
Take Baraka for BR...8K transfer.
The problem is there's nothing really better than a 4K projector these days. This 617 frame is going to be 28,000 x 9,334 ... or about 7 times more horizontal pixels than the best projectors on the market today can produce. That's a lot of overhead to carry around. I know redcode is pretty impressive for processing large amounts of data, but the math is staggering for how much space is needed: 28,000 x 9,334 x 16bpp x 25fps = 13 gigabytes/second or over 785GB/min
It's a cool product that is about 15 years too early to be useful at that resolution. An 8K model would really be more useful today and still provide plenty of headroom for the future.

But you have a new company out to make some big waves. And they are trying to say "hey...sfx guys....shoot your plates on this shit right here." " hey, DPs, shoot your big sweeping establishing shots with this big ass sensor right here."
One of the biggest problems in the world of HD has always been coming out with a camera with no real way to perform post on it right away.
Wont argue with you on that.
