Re-sizing photos for the web

Hey all,

I've seen this in a couple of threads already, about how EXIF data is stripped off of photos if you use the *Save for the Web* feature in PS. I've used this method for all of my pics on Flickr, namely because I can set the size by pixels, versus, say, inches. The problem is, none of the metadata is preserved and it'd be nice if it was, both for my info and for others.

When I go to Image->Resize->Image Size, the only options are percent, inches, cm, mm, points, etc. No option for pixel dimensions. I use PSE 4.

My question is how do the rest of you do it (re-size), both in order to preserve the EXIF and to mazimize image quality for web posting?

Thanks.

Hmm, wish I could help. In CS3, I use Image --->Image Size, and the first option is "pixel dimensions." The exif data is preserved.

(Not the same issue, but I think Jup's question about not finding the exif on the pic I posted from flickr was a flickr thing, rather than a saving/resizing/software thing. The exif is available on flickr's site, but not the linked photo...or something like that.)

Thanks. That's screwy. I don't know why that option wouldn't be available in PSE like it is in PS. Maybe the answer is right under my nose. I'll poke around some more.

I did a google image search for "resize elements 4" and all of the results look pretty much just like the regular Photoshop Image -> Image Size dialog that Wndrlst mentioned. I take it you're not seeing this?

Not like that. I get a similar window, but the pixel dimension portion of the window shows the dimensions, but that part of the window is grayed out, and won't allow me to change anything.

The only thing it's letting me change is the numbers under document size. Maybe some setting needs to be changed within PSE? Or it might be a disabled feature in PSE

OK. If I select "Resample Image" the pixel dimensions fields open up. However, I thought resampling was not desirable due to loss of data.

I think I just answered my own question. This per PSE's Help Center:

If you’re preparing images for the web, it’s useful to specify image size in terms of the pixel dimensions.
In the Editor, choose Image > Resize > Image Size.
Select Resample Image, and choose an interpolation method.

I just didn't have resample selected. For web use this would probably be the way to go. I don't know if this will preserve EXIF data for Flickr, but I'll give it a try.

That did it. EXIF is saved when I resize this way. Apparently Save for the Web does strip EXIF data.

Thanks for the input Billiam and wndrlst.

do you guys have to manually hit enter at each of the 2 batch steps? for me it is the only way that the image resize goes through. anyway to do this with irfanview and preserve exif?

this technique doesn't work for me at all, i even uninstalled cs2 and tried with cs3.

in short:
new action>>open image>>resize image>>end action
and then you run the batch, i even hit enter on every dialogue that popped up telling me to resize the image...wtf?
