Preserving newspapers?

Wasn't sure where to put this, since it really doesnt belong anywhere. But - I know that preservation in itself deals with photogs, so I thought I'd start here.

I have kept 3-4 of the newspapers from 9/11, and would like to hang onto them and make sure they are around for me to pass them on to someone eventually.

I currently just have them sitting in open-air, on a shelf in my storeroom. It is dark and dry - but I'm wondering what else I could be doing better. I know very little more than catch phrases - such as I know I should be buying something acid free? Can you buy a "newspaper sack" to put them in? I would like to be able to look at them possibly someday - but I guess that's not a priority.

Spacebags sounds like a good idea, but light is the paper killer.

Acid is also a paper killer, including the acid in the printed paper itself. I have a large comic book collection, and it is an ongoing concern. Mylar bags are acid free and can be used to preserve newsprint type paper. I'm not sure if they make them large enough for a newspaper, but you could check.

Are these Mylar bags air tight, or are they just like a mylar "paper bag"? Wondering because they sell balloons big as hell..lol I could just keep my eyes open for a large one, and cut the sucker open when its useful life has been fulfilled.

How well does lamination work?

I have a few articles from several years ago that someone laminated for me, although I also keep them in a box that has no light in it...

The Mylar bags for comics are sized for comics. There are also different sizes for things like magazine sized periodicals, and there may well be bigger ones still. The are not air tight, but they are acid free, which is the main culprit in yellowing paper. Most comic collectors also use something called backing boards within the bag, right behind the comic, which just helps guard against bending.

That might work too. If you don't want to take the newspaper out once in a while to look at it, and only want to display the front page, lamination would probably work really well. But once you laminate it, that's it, it's laminated for life pretty much. I know places like Kinko's can laminate large documents.

Info on preserving newspaper:

http://www.archivalmarketplace.com/n...servation.html

You need to neutralize the acid inherent in newspaper print. It's not cheap.

They also sell newspaper size storage bags.

This place is cheaper:

Krylon makes something along the same line but I don't know why the huge price difference.
