One last poll...help a guy out

I'm ordering tomorrow (as long as Paypal has their act together and I had funds from some other dude transfered to my account)....

Please vote, and also give me your opinion on the matter....
I know there will be those that will say "Do option one...glass is more important than body..." and then there will be the "Do option two...in the end you'll hit yourself for not getting it because of it's capabilities/features..."

If nothing else, even if that is the type of answers I get, I want to see what the majority is....

Option 1:

Nikon D80
Nikkor 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR
Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR
'Understanding Exposure' Book
Total: $1764

Option 2:

Nikon D300
Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR
'Understanding Exposure' Book
Total: $2215

Logic is telling me one thing, while ego/the voice saying "you know you're gonna want that one" is telling me another.

So lemme here it from some of you that have been around the block so to speak

Lol...

I should've included an option saying

"D300 with more glass....suck it up; photography is expensive."

Both are a good chunk of change, but if you're like me, you're going to kick yourself down the road for not getting the better camera. If you're serious about your hobby, get the D300. You can always add to your lens collection down the road, one lens at a time as you figure out what you want.

here is a serious. Do you ever see yourself upgrading to a full chip camera?

If yes. I would never buy a DX lens.

Thats what I was thinking. D300 is a million times better than D80, and the 18-200 will cover most of what you need to get started.

are you upgrading from anything?

with as little as good lenses should depreciate, and how many outlets there are these days for selling them. I never let future sensor size dictate what lenses I buy.

I am less familiar w/ Nikons though, but I voted for #2. I've heard good things about the 18-200. I'm sure it has some weaknesses compared to the other lenses you mentioned. But right now i'm thinking of getting one big zoom, and the rest prime, so that sounds appealing to me.

Thanks!

It's just that I can't afford the investment of an FX camera right now. I love the idea and the possibilities of one, but I just cant. I guess I could get an older camera, but I feel like I might be losing something, not only feature wise, but performance wise if I went with an older full frame.

You'll do just fine with a cropped body, don't worry if you have to buy a DX lens. Now that Nikon has finally done FF in their dSLR's, there's going to be a market for those lens. I know this sounds backwards but it has worked for Canon the last few years. Certain EFS lenses sell like crazy on the used market.

My only issue is unless you have a leica, or a rare/discontinued lens glass just doesnt hold the value it once did.

This is just me, and only one man's advice. Just my personal preference.

And I never said it...but go D300.

Canon lenses hold their value. That's why I said maybe it's about to change with Nikon now offering FF bodies.

I would personally rather have a camera that took better pictures than one that "felt better" in my hands....

which is why I own a Canon

Hell, buy a 40D... much better than a Nikon IMO

Debatable.

Not what I'm considering though.

If it was true, then why doesn't everyone have a canon?

Dont be a fucking retard.

A 40D is better than what? A D40x? Yeah, It is. A D300...no, perhaps on par...a D700/D3, you're on crack.

Get the bias bullshit out of your head. There is always Leica to reign supreme over all, and none of here are Leica shooters.

Take glass out of the equation. Which is usually the most important element in photography. Canon Vs Nikon has always been debatable. I've talking to lens technicians who find Nikon to be the best constant testing. I've others who say Canon. Its a preference.

Bodies. Its now technology. Nikon trumps Canon, who comes out to Trump Nikon, who comes to Trump Canon. That is going to be the pattern of things for a LONG time if not ever for these two companies.

So, what then, does it all really boil down to? Same shit we've been telling everyone...the system the user prefers. Whose menus do you like better, which feels better to hold, do you likea thumbstick or a scroll wheel?

Find the system you like.

Really, its stupid of you to make such a blanket statement of that nature. Hopefully, you were just having a moment and your head really isn't that far up your ass.

The one thing Canon does better than Nikon, better than anyone, is point and shoot cameras. Thats the one area where they are leaps and bounds above everyone.

If I had like 2k, I probably wouldn't buy a canon right now either. They are really needing to upgrade the 5d, as it should at least be competing w/ the d700. All these new nikons have a lot of canon people switching over, as they seem to be lagging a little behind in technology.

I wasn't honestly suggesting he buy a 5d, I just thought it was funny that he had such a strong nikon bias in all the other threads and doesn't even own a camera. If anything If I had 2k now though, Id probably be waiting patiently for the 5dmkII or 3d/6d rumors, I haven't really been keeping up w/ all the canon rumors. Unfortunately I don't have 2k, and at least the rebel line can still have AF w/ all canon and 3rd party lenses

I honestly think canon's far superior P&S line up lead me into their SLRs. I think nikon needs to step up their game there, if they are trying to be known as the premier camera company. I guess professionals would be glad they aren't spending their time and money trying to produce P&S and printers, but they just had a bad rep from their p&s line, that I avoided them even though I do have some really old MF nikkor lenses lying around.

Wait a bit on the price for the d300.

I went from a canon xti
to a d80 and now a d300.

xti was stolen from my tsx
d80 was due for the upgrade
d300 is just rocking.

1) not coming down on you for your joke. I got the humor in that.

2) Yes, Nikon has the gold cup on technology right now. And like I said, Canon will be right around the corner to take it. Then, Nikon will get it back, then Canon, etc etc etc. Its technology, its a cycle. You dont think when the 5d came out there were Nikon users who wanted to/did switch? Hell, I wanted full frame and was ready to sell it all.

3) Nikon, much like Canon, isn't "trying to be known" as a premier camera company. They are one. And they have been for decades. Both of them.

Come on guys, grow up.

I was trying to agree w/ you

Nikon is in the lead now (technology wise), but I'm sure canon is working their asses off on the next gen stuff to try and outdo nikon. Only time will tell if or when they will though.

I am just disappointed nikon would put their distinguished name on cameras that also say 'coolpix' on them

Tell him what you really think, Sarlacc.

Seriously, these Canon v. Nikon wars are stupid. Both companies make top flight products, and it really comes down to a question of ergonomics, lens systems and what kind of shooting you want to do.

It seems Nikon has taken the lead with its latest releases, this after years of Canon producing the best D-SLR bodies (IMO). It's sure to swing back the other way eventually, and on and on and on. The competition is good or everyone.

Pick the system that best suits your needs and stick with it, because it's all about the glass anyway. All the cameras mentioned here produce outstanding image quality. After that, it's up to the photog.
