I'm sure it will still be around, pretty sure the demand was crazy for it because of the instant rebates and the additional savings with the B&H coupon.

I haven't had any issues with flare or dust in the last 10,000 frames with my 17-55.

I think it's just back ordered because of demand like Mizouse mentioned. Canon actually doesn't make the same lens all year long, they do them in batches. If one model sells better than predicted, there can be a couple week shortage + shipping time to refill shelves here.

I need to rent a lens for a week or so. Can someone recommend which one to get for my canon XT?

Im trying to get a macro lens that would be able to take close up pictures of circuit boards. Mainly the black flim thats in this pictures

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2019/...91630165_b.jpg

I need a shot like that but it being much more detailed and closer. Any advice?

You also might want to use an extension tube with the macro to get even closer. The size just depends on how close you'll need to get.

I found that a set of extension tubes is a valuable investment. Even a standard 50mm lens can be turned into a high magnification macro with a few mm of extension.

Teleconverters don`t help with magnification, they just increase the working distance. Extension tubes will let you work closer, hence increasing magnification.

The 100mm macro is a good choice though and should meet your needs without any other extras.

Oops, I was half asleep when I posted that... yes, the 1.4x converter will magnify 1.4x. It doesn`t let you move closer though.

Ya, that`s the set I use and they work great. In all likelihood though, just the normal 1:1 magnification of the 100mm macro will probably be more than enough for your sort of work.

The real trick you're going to run into is trying to keep the subject parallel to the focal plane, then trying to get enough light on it. What I would suggest is to get a little tabletop tripod for your camera, then get a little vice clamp for your circuit boards. Flip the boards so they're standing vertically, and use a nice bright lamp to light the surface.

No problem. You're going to have a little bit of a learning curve trying to get used to macro photography.

To start, try turning the lens to it's closest focus point, then move the camera forward or backwards to bring your subject into focus. Then, if the subject still doesn't fill enough of the frame, try adding the 12mm ring. If that doesn't work keep adding rings until the subject is big enough.
The rings will cause some light loss, so the more extension you use, the longer your exposure times will be. That shouldn't be a problem if your camera is on a tripod and your subject isn't moving though. The macro world is a cool one, so I'm looking forward to your shots!

Next time, go with UPS Expedited because it includes brokerage and it gets here faster. Typically it's only $15 to $20 more than standard.

Funny story about that, I had purchased an Item from this vendor before, and they're shipping rates are just price brackets, so if your order is between 0.00-100.00 it's just a flat fee of 19.95. The last item I purchased from them it was sent UPS expedited and I paid no additional fees, so I thought I was good to go for this as it fit the same requirements, Boy was I wrong. I guess because the box was a little bigger or whatever they sent it ground

New policy, I'm not ordering shit till they confirm method.

I'd contact the seller/shipper and let the know what happened, this time as well as last. Let them know this inhibits your chances of buying from the again. Maybe they'll pushed back some money your way.

On a 40D the 24-70 is 38-112, what do you want to do. Get a faster lens or lengthen your reach? If you want to lengthen your reach go with 70-200, if you want to spend the same $$$ go with the 4.0 IS.

24 is a bit tight on a cropped body. Its a great lens though. And good to have if you ever plan on upgrading to the EOS-5D.

Its no coincidence that 17-55 comes out to around the same range as the 24-70 on a cropped body. The 24-70 was the walkaround lens of choice for film cameras back in the day.

If you're looking for a general all-around lens, I would recommend the 17-55. Either way, welcome to fast glass.

The last one looks really cool!

The trick to capturing flat surfaces is to keep them completely parallel to the front of the lens. The depth of field is so shallow with a macro at this distance that even a couple degrees out of parallel will make a big difference.

A simple white or black background also helps to isolate the subject. Try this: put a sheet of white paper down (or use a white table) , then put your subject on a piece of glass. Lift the glass a few inches above the white background, shine some light on the white paper or table. The backlight will give some really nice definition to your subject, but you'll also need a light in front to expose properly.

Did you rent extension tubes with the macro too?
