new Nikon D60
Its a replacement to the D40X
doesnt seem like much has changed, just the inclusion of the 18-55 VR lens and anti dust features.

Also, Nikkor updates 18-55 kit lens with VR
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0711/07...nikkor1855.asp
hmm.. is it just me or is Nikon out of numbers to use,
only one left is D90 which i guess would be the replacement for the D80

and then for their entry level camera, they started with D50 then went backwards to D40 and then now they're going forward with D60
im just saying they screwed up their numbering system.

I think most consumers who have shot nothing but P&S cameras at arm's length will prefer an SLR that has live view. Toe-to-toe, the XSi is a far more appealing machine.

and imo the XSi is going to be a great camera and canon did a good job updating their rebel series

Or to compare with the XSi:
- XSi has 14-bit recording vs. 12-bit
- XSi has highlight tone priority mode thanks to the 14-bits
- 3" LCD w/LiveView vs. 2.5" without
- 9-point AF system vs. 3-point
- 12mp vs. 10mp (not that it matters)
- Compatible with all EF and EF-S mount lenses, whereas the D60 is only compatible with newer motor drive lenses
- includes full version of software, Nikon charges extra to unlock features on their software

The XTi had that 18 months ago.
In defense of the D60, it will be $100-150 cheaper than the XSi.
Although the Nikonians over at dpreview aren't too happy about the D60 either.
it's the world's first dslr with "Eye-Fi" support...

Nikon's D60 is world's first Eye-Fi enhanced camera

It may be a low-end DSLR contender, but Nikon's D60 can still surprise. Seems Nikon and Eye-Fi are in cahoots as the D60 was just announced as the first shooter crowned "Eye-Fi Connected." The D60 recognizes the Eye-Fi wireless 2GB SD card when inserted then automatically adjusts its "power timer settings" so that picture transfers aren't interrupted. Kind of important when uploading hundreds dozens of 10.2 megapixel photos over WiFi. In return for the powerful industry nod, Eye-Fi will offer on-line integration with Nikon's "my Picturetown" this Spring. We'll be sure to go hands-on with the combo at PMA just as soon as we get the chance.

This is quickly turning into another "my dad can beat up your dad" thread.
Canon and Nikon are both excellent cameras. And they both have their shortfalls. All it really comes down to is which one you personally prefer.
It's not the camera that takes the picture.

you forgot a lens too. the 16-85mm VR DX lens was released also. I assume this is a replacement of the 18-70 as the specs are very similar and it has a metal mount instead of the plastic mount on the 18-55 and 18-135 lenses.

I think my comment was mis-interpreted. I dont think either new entry level is blowing my skirt up. And I didnt realize the xti had anti dust. I thought it was a first.

Almost any F-Mount lens post 1977 can be used on the current bodies. (Except older film bodies can't use the newer G lenses because they don't have external aperture rings.)
Now, since older lenses don't have the contacts or electronics in them, they wont interface with the camera body, but such is the case with the older lenses and any newer body. And odds are, if you are using the lenses, you aren't using any of the internal metering anyway.
Nikon has has pretty much the same mount since the 1950s.
