I just got an SLR today, its a Canon XSI, now my question is, what essentials do you guys recommend,i.e.filters,extra battery...etc

I have gone through the stickies and read up on understanding exposure and most of all that good stuff, I will get pics as soon as I get home from work

Congrats!

The extra battery is a good idea. Also, get a Rocket Blower and a good lens cloth. I wouldn't bother with filters at this point. An Op/Tech Pro neck strap would be a nice upgrade to the stock strap.

Welcome to the world of DSLRs! Get your credit card ready as you'll find yourself "needing" this accessory then another, then another

Seriously, I would recommend:

extra battery
fast memory card (I use Sandisk Extreme III 8 gig on my Nikon D200)
good camera bag - I have a backpack that holds all my gear plus my 13" Macbook Pro and a smaller "on the go" bag that holds my camera body, flash, two lenses and other essentials (extra batteries, memory card, etc).
Photo editing software - ie Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, Aperture etc. I've found half the fun of digital photography is post processing.
Join a photo sharing site like Flickr - great place to learn from other photographers.

Good luck and go out and take tons of pictures!

Looks pretty good, first one, find another spot away from orange sign, third one shoot in portrait to get a better shot of ceiling.
