Need a New Camera!!!
Hey all - I am in the market for a new camera, mine is broken and it was time to upgrade anyway. So I don't want to spend more than $300-$400 and I would like something not too big and bulky. I had a sony cybershot (lost) and a casio exilim (broken). Please give me ideas/suggestions on cameras I should be checking out. Thanks!!
somebody started a similar thread on new p/s. lots of people recommended Canons.

If you're looking for a point and shoot, look around at some previous "I'm looking for a new camera" threads. There's lots of good information that's pretty current as a jumping off point.
Also, you can't go wrong with Canon in the P&S market. What are your priorities in a camera? Strictly size? What do you shoot, what kind of functionality is important to you, etc...
Benny beat me to it...

I would suggest looking at Canon's SD line of camera's.
Very good, small and slim

yea but the canon xsi is 700$, the cheapest i could find.. meanwhile sony is always hovering around 500$
not sure if the 200$ is worth it.
OK, so you save a little money now, what's the future that you think you'll want with it. If you see yourself doing a lot more than Sony's current line up, then you're OK. The thing is about growing with your equipment. You're not going to be able to do so with Sony, you could find yourself having to sell it to get where you want to be.
Sony will sell you a body, but you'll pay $$$$ to get the rest of the stuff you need. Canon and Nikon are set, they have many, many items out there already, plus there's a huge second hand market for their stuff, Canon more than Nikon, because Canon has sold more over the years. Plus many third party companies make more stuff for Nikon and Canon than for others.
I'm not knocking Sony equipment, I'm looking at the bigger picture
You can't compare the XSi with the A300 maybe the Canon XS.

i guess ill save up for the xsi
should i get any lens to begin with? or just the original one is fine for now
The kit lens will be good enough to start with. With that lens, you'll be able to see what you might be missing. Whether you need wider or longer or faster, faster meaning f/stop for low light.
You could also start with used equipment, you could get better to start with at a cheaper price.
