Is this possible with my canon sd450? I'd like to photograph lightning and some other misc things but i've looked all around in the manual and cant seem to find this.

I've got an SD400 so it might be different, but:

Go into Manual mode
Go to menu, and turn "long shutter" on (off by default)
Hit the func/set button to bring up the menu on the left, and go to the exposure setting
Hit menu (two stars/moon picture)

Then you can adjust from there
