I'm new to photography so I only have one lens so far. (50mm f/1.4 on a 5D) I'm getting the 24-105L f/4 IS though.

Not sure it's organized the way you want, but you may want to look here:

I shoot events for my college along with the college newspaper.

Then just cars, some random landmarks, and friends.

1. EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS by far gets the most use out of my four lenses. If it didn't have the issue of drawing dust inside, it would be the perfect lens, IMO. Still mighty good.

2. EF-S 10-22 moderate use, but great for those shots where no other lens will suffice.

3. EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS primarily for sports shooting, but great for other things too. Primary drawback is its girth.

4. EF 50 f/1.4 Doesn't get as much use as the others, but the sharpest, fastest lens I own. Primes are a joy to work with, and tack, tack sharp.

About the only other lenses I can see really needing are a good macro and a tilt shift lens, which I'm starting to covet. After that, it's pure greed. The kit I have now is pretty darn good for my uses.

Even though I've had basically the same kit for a while, my lens 'of choice' has changed over time.
It's not interesting to shoot the same thing over and over. So you start experimenting
and playing with different subjects and focal ranges.

I tend to have a favorite 'range' I'm playing in, and use that lens 80% of the time.

When I first started, I was strictly mid-range due to my primary lens: 28-135.
Then I shifted towards zooms and candids and my 80-200 became my main lens.
Then I went into landscape mode and my 10-22 was my primary.
Now I'm back in mid-range somehow, with my 24-70.

Ask me again in another 8 months, and maybe I'll be a macro shooter or something.......

I shoot Sigma now. So all of my lenses are Sigma. The camera has a 1.7x crop

In order of most used:

18-50 f/2.8 - General purpose
18-200 f/3.5-6.3 OS - General purpose (it replaced a very heavy 70-200 f/2.8 in this range for most used)
24-70 f/2.8 - Portraits
105 Macro f/2.8 - Jewelry (products)
